It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

100 shares @ 0.38 each

Hopefully the 5000 guy now understands that he doesn't need to keep bidding his own prices up.

Don't you think that allowing bidders to change their bids is a bad idea, as well as reposting them endlessly? I may make bid 5000@0.8 and then say "please update my bid to 1@0.4", and you will end with lower income (4999 for left bids) and arbiter will do hard work making his tables - "is this bid new or old one? And what time is belongs - is is in game, or under 5K shares border by time sorting rule?".
instead of this you may think about 2 options:

1. Simply add maximum amount to all bids: 100@0,3 M100 -> 100@0.31 M200 100@0.32 M200 with 5K border at 50@0.31 bid =>will bought 50@0.31 + 100@0.32, or if 5K shares border below 100@0.31 100@0.31 + 100@0.32. And all clear with time order.
2. At lest make bidders to write post numbers in their messages:
#25 100@0.3 - confirm
#27 200@0.35 - cancel
new 250@0.35

Too many "suggestions" from me, I see. But I am simply trying to make things more clear, sorry if it is too annoying...

You may think about including post numbers in your table, and making posts for PMs to make delay for them smaller. Like this:

Yes, bids are heating up, so I'll go for two updates a day (can't do more, have to work and sleep, sadly Tongue)

As for the additional info you proposed: linking to the post-numbers is a good idea. The proposed table with shares left and bought does not provide more information than the current format with the outbid line does, so I'll keep it as is. Thanks for the input.

And I shouldn't be listed twice. I'm only bidding on 300 shares. My current bid is 300 @ 0.31.

Sorry, I'm not too experienced with auctions. I saw some posters explicitly stating to replace their existing bids, that's why I assumed placing a new bid does not automatically invalidate previous ones. I'd appreciate if future bids would explicitly state that information (unless it is some unwritten rule).

I assure you that ASICMINER shares won't go for 0.30 from now on for a long time, nevertheless I'll remove your 300@0.3 bid from the list.

Thanks,
zefir

is is in game, or under 5K shares border by time sorting rule?".

Also unclear how the time-sorting rule will be applied to PM'd bids.  I would think in the name of fairness, PM'd bids would have to be a "bidder's risk" type of scenario, i.e. when zefir can repost it to the thread it counts.  Hence why I made this account to remain anonymous but still bid.

No, it is not annoying, I appreciate all your input if it improves the processing in any way.

Openly speaking, I did not expect so many pitfalls and sources for misunderstanding when I started this auction. Reading other threads seemed that it is an easy process - which in fact is if you are bidding for one item. I am trying to adapt what I know from commercial bidding platforms and use common sense, so I'm sorry it still bears so much confusion.

As for the bid updates:
The problem you were describing does actually not exist: updating a bid goes only one direction, i.e. you con only update an existing bid for the same amount of shares by increasing the price. Everything else is not an update but a new bid. So posting 5000@0.8 first and 1@0.4 after will result in two active bids, otherwise the whole bidding process won't work.

I added the post numbers to the bid status table and think it is quite clear. I'd refrain from adding more data to it and make it less readable, since I think it serves its purpose and we have the complete bid log in case of disputes available anyhow.

What do you think?

Well, new rule "you con only update an existing bid for the same amount of shares by increasing the price" makes things absolutely clear, thank you. (If this question was for me...)

Nah, please understand that this is not an automated auction system. I have a life and am not going to wait for any bid to update the table 24/7. I got a day job to handle, so that is just not doable.

I update the table twice a day and I am expecting anyone to be able to add the new bids since last status update for his decision. Otherwise, he would just wait for the next update.

I do not really see the problems addressed here being issues for the following reasons
  • non disputable: every single event is logged in this thread, there is nothing to dispute; it is not really relevant to bother bid history now when those bids are going to fall over anyhow
  • no urgency: since the auction ends only after 12h without counter-bids, there is no need to worry a sudden closure; if there are disputes about bid orders and such, we have enough time to resolve them; you won't run into a situation where you missed a bid or placed a wrong one caused by premature ending

So please let us be sane and make this an enjoyable experience for us all. I assure you there will be no reason for disputes.

100 shares @ 0.38 each

Hopefully the 5000 guy now understands that he doesn't need to keep bidding his own prices up.

Since I've also gotten a PM about this, I thought I'd clarify.  I'm not driving my own prices up.  Someone else bid for 4500 shares @ 0.36, above me.  Zefir's offer is for up-to an extra 1500 shares for someone who buys 3500+, so I'm not going to outbid someone who puts up a 100 or 200 share bid.

Similarly, there are a lot of other ASICMiner share auctions going on right now, and the open market is coming soon.  So clearly there is a cap on what these are worth, for each person to determine.  Its kind of like buying and selling in the pre-and-post market times on the NYSE- You can buy, but it is at your own risk, and often you'll buy at one price only to have the actual market opening price be wildly different.  We are a subset of the population that specifically looked for these shares, and thus, values them a lot.

Yes it was a response to your previous question. If you ever participate in other auctions, you should know that you can't update bids to the wrong direction Wink

But glad to hear you're now fine with the rule.

Please, don't take it personally. I simply looked through messages in a chronological order, filling in my table. And I was surprised when saw a bid raising price without need. That's all.

Update bid to 200 @ 0.36

It already got outbid, but could you please specify what kind of update you meant:
1) update your existing 300 @ 0.33 to 100 @ 33 + 200 @ 36
2) add a new bid on top of your existing one

See how simple things get complicated Wink

200 @ 0.365

This also got outbid, but to make clear: prices are multiples of Bitcents, so that was an invalid bid and therefore not recorded.

Update bid to 200 @ 0.36

It already got outbid, but could you please specify what kind of update you meant:
1) update your existing 300 @ 0.33 to 100 @ 33 + 200 @ 36
2) add a new bid on top of your existing one

Clearly, update it. Although, either way, it leads to the same thing: I'm outbid at 0.33. And now I'm outbid at 0.36.
