Well from what I understand they're basically a newish clone of Bitcoin except there's more of them and they're a bit easier to get, not many people have adopted them compared to Bitcoins and they're definitely not worth a lot right now. This is the main website for them but right now it's down http://litecoin.org/ beyond that there isn't really that much more to say about Litecoin I don't think but it is a good idea to have more currencies out there to compete, just a question of whether everyone else thinks the same way.

Are there any real competition to bitcoin? Those other currencies seems pretty useless to me.

Right now there is none, for IMO three reasons: 1. Our marked is still way to small to really support more than 1 cryptocurrency 2. No alt currency has yet managed to have any advantage / improvement over Bitcoin. 3. Bitcoin has the network effect. Being the first cryptocurrency.

All previous versions of currency will no longer be supported as of this update

Its easy to convert Bitcoin to litecoin using btc-e, I think there's room in this world for more than one crypto-coin, litecoin is very cheap at the moment - is it a great speculative investment? That's simple for everyone to research and decide for themselves.

It´s more focused in CPU and GPU minning , so less energy efficient.

I think that they complement each other very well, not rivals, I wouldn't be surprised to see LTC ending up as having a value about 10% of BTC's long term http://forum.litecoin.net//index.php/topic,812.0.html

Litecoin will be more popular when ASICS for Bitcoin finally come out, many miners will switch to Litecoin.

Very important point here. +1. At worse it'll be a pump and dump where miners mine ltc for btc.
