First of all, I want to say that I am not part of any illegal activities or something similar. I ask this question because I am curious.

Is Bitcointalk.org (the owners/maintainers) passing information to investigation authorities on request for user information in the case of big frauds and scams ( e.g. Mt.Gox etc)?

Yes. The forum has received subpoenas in the past and has complied. Read: BFL Subpoena.

Yeah they have to if they want to keep the forum up and running I would imagine.  This is life.  Bitcoin is not above the law nor is this forum, and I'm glad to see scams being prosecuted.

I am sure this is a shock for many forum members here.  Shocked
But I can see why, since the court of law can ask for information for a case when it comes to laundering money.

Really no one is safe from prosecution of the law and if they want details they are going to get them most of the time. So just imagine some one is looking over your shoulder at all times and you should be alright. Pretty sure I am on a list somewhere due to gambling but they most likely think I was sending funds to terrorists. Some day I will have to explain I am a degen gambler in front of judge and suspect quite a lot of gamblers will be in the same boat.

The positive regarding the BFL episode was that if a PM of yours was submitted, you were informed about it.
So it won't come as a bolt from the blue if you are questioned.

It depends on where the servers are based. If forum is hosted in US located servers, not compliance with US laws can lead to suspension of hosting account but if it doesn't co-operate with other countries government agencies say Chinese government, then it may only be blocked in China. In short forum is bound to follow the law of country from where it operates but it is its discretion to follow other laws or not

There is a ton of info out there no need to take up a bunch of meta space for BFL.  But they made asics and sold them as pre-orders and took far longer to make.  Many that bought with BTC lot ton's of money.  They never did really recover, just kept getting later and later on products.   They were a horrible company.

But do some googling and you can find many stories.

*puts on tinfoil sombrero*

I wouldn't be surprised at all if there are various investigation authorities who have bitcointalk accounts with which they can monitor, observe and look into whatever red flags which may happen to pop up on their radar.

Nope. The CIA operates everywhere, except domestically within the USA, or so the law says, but we all know how fond of following the law the CIA is. The NSA collects information from everywhere as well. The DEA has also been known to do international operations.

The posts are public for everyone even for visitors and the posts are fast indexed in google, maybe there are some private boards for staff but don't know for sure.
Also seeing that when you send a PM you will see this "Note: PM privacy is not guaranteed. Encrypt sensitive messages." which i understand that everything is open.

Just presume you type and it is documented somewhere in a desert if that troubles you stop talking about banging midgets and put on a facade that does not match your own in real life. Oh wait thats facebook accounts!

The people that are paranoid about privacy are not on the internet and thats really the only way to be sure you are not being tracked for slamming midgets into the bed posts.

Of course they are.

It would be damn near dereliction of duty on their part if they weren't.

Isn't this pretty much a case of, your anonymity is in your own hands and not the forums?

As far as I can tell you are allowed to come to this forum as anon as you want to be, and the forum cannot give anyone any information that you did not give the forum, because they don't have it to be able to give..

So if you want to be anon you have to be anon to the forum and not expect the forum to keep you anon..

That is what the Hollywood movies want u to believe. But, the truth is CIA can not even assassinate their home grown enemy Snowden, who is sitting peacefully in Russia for years. On the contrary, KGB got into UK and poisoned Alexander Litvinenko without a problem.
