Many people generate or "mine" the coins by participating in that network and a growing number of web stores and online firms accept bitcoins as payment.
They have become a very widely used alternative payments system and one bitcoin is currently worth about £17 ($26).

It's logical really, given that pizza was pretty much the first tangible non-cash item bitcoin was traded for (AFAIK). I'll sell you a couple of delicious home-made pizzas for BTC10k!  |

... it's part of the initiation ritual into bitcoin ... if you haven't over-payed for something and been 'deflated' out of a small fortune you probably don't have enough skin in the game, pizzas just happen to be popular item. Pizzas and modified PCI-e extender cables ... |
