ubuntu or windows?

No point in bitcoin

Go for a CPU coin like HODL

Use Nicehash or MinersGate, I would reccomend Nicehash

https://www.nicehash.com/?p=software#cpu

what cpu we are talking about? because to mine HODL you need certain instruction, old cpu does not work, if the cpu are recent you can even mine in solo, just download the HODL client and start the solo mining embedded in the client itself

Old CPU does work, just slower. New CPUs with AESNI are much faster

Mining Ethereum on work resources can get you fired if people notice it is impacting network or resource performance.  24 VPS x 4 cores would be 96 MH/s max if each core did 1 mh/s.   Usually it takes 4 high end cores to do 1-2 MH/s.

So if 96 MH/s then about $388-$500/month at today's rate of $9.25/Eth

Personally, I'd ask the boss if its ok or I'd only use work to host the miner for its power and network.  Usually there are policies against such activities and I've known people to get fired for bitcoin mining at work.
