Greetings fellow bitcoin maniacs,
As a practical question, what do you think is the real max temp for your hardware when running in the warmer months coming?  Sure, we all know that 60C or less is ideal, but how high do you go and feel ok with it?

I'll start: frankly I get antsy when I see it above 65C. Not sure if that's really a problem, or I'm just being extra cautious. Don't have more than 6 months in the mining game (if only I was paying attention years earlier, common lament I know...) so my own experience is limited.

Thoughts?

Anyone?

Bueller?

The boards from both Avalon and Bitmain are supposed to shut down at 80c. This is not the actual thermal limit for the hardware, but the limit imposed to protect customers from actually letting them run too hot, They will actually hash north of 90c before becoming a dumpster fire. Anything under 80c should work just fine, or keep it under 75c if you are paranoid.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

when the summer heat comes the ½ing will also come.   So a slight underclock keeping temps under 70c should be enough.

I have had my garage reach 95 f in April my avalon 6's worked fine ,but after a while I had some over heating .  I plan to down clock just a bit for the summer.

Having been inside the avalon 6 heat will not detach a heat sink.

Having seen photos of the s-7 and detached heatsinks  I will try to keep my 1 s-7 downclock to avoid overheating.  I have a batch 2 so I will run it at freq 450 and hash at 3800gh use about 850 watts.

I would recommend under 70c, better 55-65c.  Some people run them really hot, I just can't get myself to do it.  Maybe if I had 500 miners and I wouldnt care if a couple lit up on fire, but hey i dont lol

These are batch 1 Avalons running since November.

Nice and toasty!

P.S. You do not want to run your Avalon hashing boards UNDER 60c. You will lose performance the colder they get.

Stop buying industrial miners, running them at home, and then complaining about the noise.

not bad for 35c ambient  is your fan speed is set to 95%?

or do you have it on auto?

or are you at 100% fan?

I was telling someone to drop from 100% to 90% on his one fan  and we ended up doing 95% . the 95% fan  was a little slower but he kept temps same.

It may have been you but I am really a bit sick with spring allergies and can't remember if it was you.

Hey gang, thanks for the replies.  I guess I'll let my hard limit go up to 70C max, tho I try to keep it lower than that if possible.  I've both UC'd a bit and changed fans on my s7 keeping them running around 30-35% to hold the cacophony down to a manageable level!

Cheers all,
VRobb  Smiley

Ive noticed my S7-F1s run consistantly hotter than all the batch 1 600 mhz S7 group that I have. All of the F1s here are modded to run a second fan but still stay a bit hotter on average it seems. I would guess its the 600mhz vs 700mhz setup causing it.

Depends on WHICH miner you are talking about.

My SP20s were quite comfortable at a reported 115C temp (on-die, not on-board) while I prefered to keep my S5s down around 60C or close and got very unhappy if they ever got much past 65.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

I been running my S5's super quiet lately, they have been doing 70-83C for 2 months now.

60C is really low in term of hardware temperature. It would be good to make sure the temps reading are accurate but you know, you put these in the oven and they dont melt. So 60C is excessively conservative.

yeah I'd say antminers around 60 is good, 70 is too much.  In any case, unless you have a datacenter or a super isolated place, keep those temps low so you can lower the fan speed.  dont forget to set that on manual.

70 is the point where I'll underclock a miner. Above 70, temps are not optimal and you'll be losing operating hours on the miner. 90 is overheating, turn off the miner and contact whoever you bought the miner from. 100.... Never been there. Depending on the type of miner, contact the company that sold it to you and ask why it's that high. If you're having temperature problems, either put a fan into the intake fan so it increases the rate of which heat exits the miner at least to the point where it's not above 80, or buy a new fan. Server-grade fans work well for bitcoin mining as they have exceptionally high rpm, but they're mostly very small and you'll need to have a bit of time to find the right one. General 120mm fans work. if you really want a good fan, try a noctua.
