Is it normal for a DPS-1200FB to be VERY loud?

So I just bought a surplus DPS-1200FB and I noticed the fan is VERY loud, is this normal, or does it need a fan replacement? I posted here bc it's bitcoin mining related and I know a decent amount of people here have them. Thanks!

Yeah they are meant to be as loud as vacuum cleaners.

 mine aren't  once it's turned on and goes tho the power up for maybe 5 mins it's very loud,then i never hear it again. I guess what it's doing is some kind of adjustment i run my two off a 240 line .one had two miners plugged into it at one time it maybe used a 1000 watts or little more.now one powers a Avalon 4.1 overclocked to 1.24 th or so . and other one powers a C1 .

Okay good to know, because mine definitely is haha. It's also a hot day so that could explain it.

Interesting, I was only around it for like the first 5 minutes it was powered on, so that could be it.

it's a nice Psu but so annoying and very loud .
it's for back up.
once it's plugged in the fan goes non stop even at a low speed it could wake up the house on idle

I've got one in an S4+, and the S4+ fans are quite a bit louder even though the PSU is outputting at least rated power, probably more.

Most of the server PSU's are pretty loud.   They have become popular due to you can get a better price going server vs atx at this point. With surplus think of data centers that did not really care about sound.

So good psu yes (depending on condition).  But something for those home mining... no in a lot of cases.

So good psu yes (depending on condition).  But something for those home mining... no in a lot of cases.

Do you think replacing the fan would work/ be safe? I'd be using something nice like a Noctua NF-A4x10.

What is this mod? I would be fine with a loud fan, that high pitched noise is the worst though.

I've seen some people cut out on the top panel and mount dual 80mm fans. Not sure how you'd fit a 120mm fan on a 1Ux2U supply.

so you need at least 1 fan and 1 grill pack

or 2 fans and 2 grill packs


3 of these fans perfectly work for the ibm 2880 and 2980 psus.  and that is more then  2800 watts for either one.

If you want to reduce the whining fan noise, you can reverse the fan so instead of pulling air out of the PSU, it pushes air into the PSU and out to the back, it greatly reduce the noise for me and has been running fine for months.

I believe the reason why it is pulling air out in factory state is because it is a server PSU and is meant to be inserted into the servers, so pushing hot air back into the servers is a no-no. But since it is free standing unit, it shouldn't be a problem reversing the fan from what I can see.

If the sensor detects warmer air, then its a positive feature for me if the fan runs at higher rpm, since it is getting more air flow through it and at the same time, it muffles the whining noise when fan is reversed, but I think the sensor is controlled by the power load. My assumption is that I underclocked/undervolt an Avalon 6 and noticed how much quiet the PSU fan got, since the Avalon 6 isn't pulling that much wattage when underclocked/undervolt. But when I left the Avalon 6 at stock settings, i noticed the fan is kicked into high rpm since it's pulling a lot more wattage.

Disclosure: I'm am no engineer, just doing my own testings and conclusions, proceed with caution at your own risk =)

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm going to leave it the way it is because after running for a while the fan quieted down a bit and it hasn't been loud since, but if I have a problem I will probably cut a whole in the top and mod it.
