I was under the impression that Bitcoin has always been hailed for its ability to conduct anonymous transactions and was considered an anonymous digital currency as it is still possible to buy/sell/trade bitcoin without the requirement of  identity proof or address proof.

However there seems to be much consensus on the forum that trust in trading bitcoin is synonymous with knowing the named identity of person you are trading with.

Is it acceptable to trade anonymously within the bitcointalk marketplace?
Is it the general consensus that doing so makes you untrustworthy by default?

It can be acceptable to trade anonymously as long your trading partner don't have a bad reputation or a negative trust in trading . It is is recommended to always use escrow just to make that the transaction is safe and legitimate . Although some people don't have a negative trust it doesnt mean that they are trusted trader so you should be careful .

Just to brush up back on the points I mentioned here.

At this point its a must. I only say this because the price of bitcoin attracts new regulars and possible chances of you being a target as well.

Esp when the bitcoin is now climbing towards the $1k marker. Its similar to knowing how much a liquor store or any business has - and their location (chances for theft) of a robbery.

What has that to do with anonymity. Also I am learning more and more that bitcoin is not truly anonymous.

Yes its acceptable and people are also accepting it more, I think its pretty good and that is also what is giving the bitcoin power in my eyes.
The fact that its anonymous, the privacy.

How can it really be if all Bitcoin transactions from day 0 are imprinted on the Blockchain for everyone to look in and search for? With every transaction you make, the chances to remain truly anonymous evaporate. And this holds true even if you create a new address whenever you transact...

Even Bitcoin mixers keep logs despite what they may claim

Yeah bitcoin anonymous nature is the one which has got such a enormous number of user profile and counting. If its not anonymous then bitcoin and other cryptcurrencies have never been used as it is now.

I'm sure it was received. if it is not accepted, the bitcoin could not flourish as it is today. That is an advanced bitcoin excess.

In my view most of the darknet has died out or collapsed on its own.

You`ll notice its not as crazy as the last year ago when you seen so many giftcards/uber/other crazy stuff appearing in the digital goods section.

the very idea of decentralized currency is anonymity at the government level and the lack of controls.  at the same time, that anonymity is at a personal and business level.  that does not make a person untrustworhty by default but does lead to the need from time to time for additional controls, like a REAL escrow and not just some schmuck that says he can be trusted

I think the answer would differ from person to person. Since bitcoin was created by satoshi and he wanted to stay anonymous then it’s completely okay for him to stay anonymous. If someone is looking to evade tax and considering bitcoin as an alternative to a swiss bank then I don’t see it white hat practice.

I don’t maintain anonymity in every case (that doesn’t mean I revel my details unnecessarily) of trade because I don’t think it’s necessary but again it’s my opinion and might be completely wrong.

for me, i think its acceptable to stay anonymous in trading, even though i understand there are some risk when you trade with the company or the person you dont know, however bitcoin was created this way, many user use bitcoin because they can stay hidden, but if you not comfortable with this then maybe bitcoin is not the right coin for you
