It is possibly true since solo miners have experienced that. Difficulty nowadays are getting hard fast and hardware should be upgraded constantly. Given the high maintenance for mining if a miner makes a mistake he will end up losing rather than earning. There are many miners who left their equipment and stop mining ad as if bitcoin mining is a killer app that kills your pocket.
