Here's the next 100 million dollar Bitcoin business idea!

Dear BitcoinTalk readers,

Last year I decided to start aggressively acquire Bitcoin related domain names. All of them are listed on the following website:

http://bitcoindomainsforsale.blogspot.com

Presently, I now own over 300 domain names. Several of them I consider to be quite premium (ie. generating a lot of type-in traffic). And the interest in them by potential buyers has been tremendous.

Here's my dilemma (and where I believe to be a potentially HUGE business opportunity). Right now there are a few ways to monetize a domain:

Affiliate Websites – Think of a good domain name, register it, and then build a website filled with various advertisements for other sites that bear a similarity to your domain name, making money off anyone who clicks on the ads and purchases the advertised products.

PPC Websites (Pay-Per-Click) – These are very much like affiliate sites, except the revenue generated comes from PPC advertising systems like Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network.

Domain Parking – There are several services, like sedo.com, where you can “park” your domain. The domain will have a variety of keyword targeted ads, similar to the ppc and affiliate sites mentioned above. You make money off the ads that your parking company puts up. Additionally, you can also list your site for sale at the same time.

Domain Purchase and Resale – Register a domain or buy an existing domain with hopes of reselling it to other domainers.

Domain Leasing – Rent the domain name out to advertisers or other interested parties.

Domain Development – Register a domain name and develop a website for it, with unique content and some sort of business model.

All these monetization strategies are interesting. However, I would love to see someone create a hybrid system that combines BOTH domain leasing and domain development. Domain holders like myself would post domains and potential business ideas. Savvy entrepreneurs/programmers would then browse through the list and decide to make a partnership pitch with the domain holder. There could be several ways to compensate the domain owner, however I think a royalty arrangement (ie. small % of sales) would make the service very appealing. Especially if the business idea only accepted Bitcoin and used an approved bitcoin gateway so that sales were easily verifiable.

Now I'm sure there are a million details to iron out, but I think there is enough here to at least start thinking how this can go from an innovative concept to an extremely profitable business.

If/when someone decided to build this service, I would pledge all my domains right away. Let's start making money together!

This is one of those ideas that sounds really good when you are drunk in a bar, but in the cold light of day, it sux!

The reality is that nobody is going to buy your domains because nobody tends to buy from a domain squatter if they don't have to!

I already have a domain with bitcoin in it, and I am already regretting it - the more I've thought about it, the more I don't think its suitable.

And it didn't cost me more than $5!

If joe blow wanted to open XYZ and had a great website name picked out was pretty sure no other business had the name, then goes to register to find out some jerk is ransoming it off. He now has to come out of poket 100X more then he would if he went to godaddy or something and paid the 3.99 or whatever. Now the NEW business man has lost capital cause some turd burgler wanted to squat domain names. We have a few business that could afford hits like that here but most of the small businesses do not have a extra 100 dollars for a domain name.

the world and especially bitcoin related part of it is filled with so many "good" ideas that you can earn a lot of money, reading the topic i thought it actually was a business idea but it is just a stupid idea

100 million dollar idea if its done right. not 100 million, but it should be more of a comfortable 5 figure range to be realistic.

Most wont do this though, esp take the time to build it out esp the affiliate website you mention at the top. Also you cant build a slimy sales one page website for affliate site anymore or you`ll get frowned upon.

as for the other ideas, I dont think theres any luck on domain hunting unless you knew a startup was using it and they want it badly enough to pay for it.

I was about to say when was the last time you actually bought a domain name right lol.

Like who the hell thinks you can make a million dollars just selling a domain name, unless "Verizon" or some huge enterpise forgot to re-new and would like to pay for it back. And even then its trademarked so youre force to give it up lol.

Most of these things are non-observant and other forms are way better. Id rather take my chances of being a youtuber and hoping for 1 video to go viral then spend this stuff.

Yea squatters are lame and I don't know why they think they should get paid because they registered it before someone else did. At least domains aren't everything, it's more of the content. You can make a successful website using the domain zzyxw.us if the content is good enough.

I'm not sure why he's getting knocked. Personally I think it's a really good idea. If bitcoin blows up & achieves mainstream adoption then businessmen/entrepreneurs are going to want to own web domains. He's probably bought them for £100 each on Go Daddy or something & they could sell for 100 times that, maybe more for a good one if bitcoin ends up achieving mainstream adoption.

It's not a 100 million USD business idea but it's got potential to give him pretty good returns. That's all we're trying to do right, make money for a better life?
