Reflow 5970

Have been building LTC rigs for the past 3 months now and after my 3rd dead 5970 I am at the point where reflowing seems like the way

Usually get a dead GPU and sometimes missing FansSpeeds & Temps in cgminer

Is this a candidate for reflowing ?

What are the directions to reflow a 5970

I have heard from 8 min to 30 min 160 degrees C

What parts remove ?
What temp ?
What process ? i.e on a cookie tray with coatings of egg and milk etc
How long ?

Will it last 3 months or is it ebay time ?

Hi I did the same with an 5970, 1 GPU was not working. Its working again now, will see for how long..

I used 160 deg C for 30 min after I removed the cooler, so that is only the layer wirth the ports.

baking/reflow lasts about 3 months in my experience.

I just put them on ebay as spares & repairs and lets someone else have the hassel fun of fixing it. You can get back 40% of value.

I never buy a "refurbished" GPU off ebay.

That reballing video was really neat.  Makes you want your own hot air rework station.

The video didn't show how they get the balls back on though, they just have a little pot of solder balls and roll them on.
Anyone who has this done should ask for the best grade solder balls with a higher melt point.
(you don't want more of that EU lead free rubbish that goes brittle after 90c)

In my experience 160 degrees (celsius) is much too low, I use 200 - 220 degrees for 20 minutes (without pre heating)..

some cards are running > 6 months now with this method.. but from 10 it only works with 4-5

When i was disasemling it I saw that somebody had already ...Somebody had reflowed it when they sold it too me

Anyway it ended up in worse shape and is now on ebay for parts

Moral of story dont try and reflow a card twice or Dont whip a dead horse

Also second moral of the story 5970's not worth the hassle for Litecoin mining

So far have bought 6 and only 3 have worked

Well 5970 have mostly been used and abused... Unless you know someone who bought it for gaming, its not worth it
