I was at a shop last week and he asked how I would like to pay.  I said bitcoin or Visa, he said oh that is still around?  Explained a bit and gave him 2mBTC.

good idea,this is why papper wallet have better used for explain to newbie how and what bitcoin is,for payment or investment,i think shop will better have more payment option,adding bitcoin would be great choice.

Better to help a new user download Mycelium to Android or Breadwallet to iPhone and send them a small sum of bitcoin to get them excited. Teach them how to buy more.

By giving him a paper wallet you may know the private key , on these days in most popular/rich countries people have android or iOS i would suggest like BNM above a mobile wallet. I like your idea by saying "bitcoin and visa" this is how us should promote bitcoin to others.

This would probably make more sense, but in a way it seems more likely that it could be he was asking about Bitcoin. I don't know what OP actually experienced, but just because Walmart dropped visa in Canada probably wouldn't mean a lot for the guy. A lot of other places probably still take Visa, and thus it wouldn't really impact the store owner.

I think carrying empty paper wallets is a relatively good idea, but I don't know if I would ever actually do it.

I have heard people giving out these paper wallets and after a month still seeing no movement on those coins. I think its more complicated for someone to be introduced to bitcoin through a paper wallet.

Not only that. I think it is not advisable to throw free Bitcoin around to people that are only marginally interested. First the effort to make the funds usable is too high for any amount below 0.05 BTC for a person that never used Bitcoin before. Second - which is the more important psychological reason - giving away Bitcoin for free makes it less desirable to own.

I would only give out Bitcoin, if the person did some work or sold some goods to explicitly obtain Bitcoin. Giving away Bitcoin without request to people barely interested makes Bitcoin appear less valuable, because something valuable is generally not given away for free. So it might actually have a negative impact on the perception of Bitcoin.

Giving away Bitcoin should require the explicitly stated desire of a person to own it. Anything else could make Bitcoin appear like the latest fad that needs marketing to be sold off to the masses.

Almost want to say that I'm proud of you! For people that use bitcoin ~ to take a few minutes to educate others about it and give a small incentive is the logical way to spread awareness.

If there are people asking about bitcoin i just give them answers bitcoin is money, i think it is simple answers and let them to think and looking for information about bitcoin.

I guarantee you 99% of people start using Bitcoins looking for ways to earn 'free' bits. People start with faucets, earning nickels on bitcointalk to write reviews for websites or whatever it might be. I would have been way more interested way faster if I didn't spend 2 months to earn those measly 2mBTC!

If I was in an evangelical mood, I don't think paper wallets are the way. They remove the most interesting elements from the whole thing which is the live exchange/internet aspect. They're also more than likely to discard or lose it.

Far better to get them to download a wallet to their phone and they can watch a live transaction take place. Even then they'll probably lose their seed.

giving it to a shop like OP is a good idea but walking around giving "people" to use bitcoin is not a good idea because after you give them free bitcoin the first thing they are going to do is taking out their phone and search "where can i sell bitcoin" and "bitcoin price" then dump it for fiat.

This actually is a good idea. I might actually have to have some empty wallets and have them printed out on a piece of paper so if they asked me about bitcoin, I can just give them the paper and the instructions on how to use it. That way, they have the opportunity to actually explore what bitcoin is and use it firsthand.

This is the strategy and the way which is pretty good. Now that everyone is using smartphones for each activity done, but we must also give sufficient bitcoin so they could feel and start thinking for using bitcoin

I did the same at work, but I only gave away some Bitcoins to the people who were genuinely interested and those who asked questions. I always have the option to swipe those coins, if these people

did not use or transferred it to their own Bitcoin address. { I keep a copy } ... I told them, if they did not use it or transferred it to their own Bitcoin address, I would take it back. You only need to give

them small amounts ... between $5 and $10 as a startup fund to play with. So yes, it is a good idea.
