I've seriously thought about this and really think we should do this. Maybe even an island nation. Would be awesome.

I wouldn't ever willingly spend money on living somewhere where democracy decides what the rules are.
If there would be a Sheriff it would need to be a private business offering me a private contract on what rules I would need to agree to, what services I would receive and how much it would cost me.
Then and only then I'd consider it.

If you plan to secede, be prepared to fight the most dangerous and misguided military in the world. It's illegal because they said so and that's final so nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh nyeh.
Heck, if Texas wanted to secede, they'd have to do so out of force. America's got a funny way of creating laws which couldn't possibly benefit society.

Interesting. No doubt you live somewhere. You pay rent? You own property? In both cases, you're spending money to live somewhere. Where is that? Or do you just live with your parents or bum off of a friend or family member? Or do you live in a cave?

Why fight? Not like they can't just circle the place with fence and lock everyone inside, shoot any incoming air traffic down. I think it isn't exactly the greatest idea to be isolated nation inside unfriendly one...

Texas has major ports, rail and roadway hubs, and a very large stretch of border - including some with Mexico. Even if they could, cutting off trade through, or with, Texas would be a very damaging thing for the US to do to themselves.

State or country is very different thing when it has either shoreline or sufficiently friendly neighbors. Only having one is a big issue... Micro-nation on other hand with unfriendly surroundings...

http://www.hutt-river-province.com/ This guy has been inside an "unfriendly" nation since 1970 Maybe you can do it outside a country that has a military the size of the next 12 countries combined.

Texas would hardly qualify as a "micro-nation." It's the second largest economy in the US. And it's almost twice the size, geographically, of Germany. No, the US needs Texas. Always has.

I was referring more to buying a town and seccessing it... Texas would work, not sure about synergies lost on either sides though...

You should be able to secede. I can technically declare my room a country, but nobody will take me seriously. All you need is a permanent population, a government, the capacity to enter into relations with other states, and not being subject to rule by any other state. This can all be achieved by claiming the right to self determination. Shout it loud and proud, get your claim throughout every media, and there's nothing the US will be able to do, without the UN coming down on them like a mass of manure.

Except call you a "domestic terrorist," toss a black bag over your head, and fly you to Egypt.
