everywhere i read about secret societies, secret millitary bases, secret  here secret there

my understanding of the wrd secret describes something not everyone knows

but when i google skul and bones it says its a secret society, how can it be secret if its listed on google

the same with area51, how is area51 any secret when everyone talks about it

is the word secret just a way to promote something that otherwise noone would be interessted in

can someone explain that??

A "secret" society is not one that nobody knows about (a tall order), but one where the public can't even guess what goes on inside. While all groups have secrets - a sports team doesn't want the opposing teams knowing its game plan, for example - we generally have a fairly good idea of what they're keeping secret and why. But very few people know what goes on at a Masonic Lodge, or Bohemian Grove, or Area 51, so they assume something sinister.

Area 51 is an odd example because its true nature is publicly known - it's a section of the Nellis Air Force Range used for testing experimental aircraft. The actual details of this testing are Top Secret, of course, and you wouldn't expect that to be controversial (you want the Chinese and the Russians and whoever to find out about new U.S. aircraft?), but for some reason people think there's more going on. I guess people catching a glimpse of the tests mistook the aircraft for UFOs, and the Air Force can't just come out and say what they really are, so now everyone thinks there's aliens there.

I think many of these types of things used to be secret in the past.

Such as Area51 was not a house hold name back when it started..
They use to say it was secret because they had to make large efforts
to hide their activity from Russian satellites.

They would mount jets on poles then measure the radar signature etc.
Then they knew when the Russian satellite was coming to look at them
then they would quickly hide the airplanes in hangars..
In an effort to hide the shape mostly i think.
But it did not work.. the full size airplanes in the desert sun would cast a shadow.
So when they removed the airplane the shadow was still a different temperature
than the rest of the surrounding area.. giving the Russians the exact shape that was a secret.

A group with little or no transparency (not to be confused with privacy) probably qualifies as secret group or secret society.
- Secrecy is unnecessary in a just world or society. I guess those who keep secret in such society are probably dangerous?
- Secrecy however should be OK in an unjust world or society.
