Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

If it's a dedicated miner, Linux for sure. It can deliver stability that Windows has a hard time doing sometimes. I also remember the old bug with multiple GPUs in Windows where you had to hook up something to the port to mine on the card... wonder if that still exists...
