in my opinion it doesn't really say anything about the "community".
1) first of all those funds did not come from bitfinex hack and the origins are not 100% clear so you can't say it was hacked
2) the person never claimed to be the hacker.
3) nobody can resist free 1000BTC =~ $600,000

p.s. i believe it is all the sham to launder those BTC or for trolling purposes!

I wont let my IP address be at risk with this kind of lie. The idiot just want some attention and I think he need a big one for doing that. I just hope he also knew about VPN's to avoid being traced.

It says nothing about the community. Let's translate this into Fiat terms. If someone was holding a lottery for 8 million dollars, with no entry fee, hell the whole county would be in on it!
I repeat, this means nothing about us. It's typical human greed.

So it seems the hacker rekcahxfb is offering to give away 1000BTC on reddit.

These funds have been stolen from individuals in the bitcoin community and not some faceless mega corp yet so far nearly 6000 people are more than happy to try their luck hoping to win the stolen cash.

From my point of view all those that signed up for it are just as bad as the scammers and it doesn't reflect well on the bitcoin community which is often viewed as a criminal entity by outside world at the best of times.

I also wonder what would be the legal ramifications for the person who wins it, I doubt they used a proxy so can be identified by I.P address, I dont think the police would be very understanding towards the person knowingly accepting $600k of stolen money.

Only 2 things:
1. When the giveaway was on bitcointalk, for quite a while there were no words about the source of the money. And even then many didn't bother to read.
2. You think too good of bitcoin community. Since I came from the (nice and light hearthed) Dogecoin community to Bitcoin, what shocked me at start was the greed so present here. Sorry if it sounds harsh...

I don`t think that this guy is going to giveaway 1000 btc.I just don`t believe it.

Is this guy some kind of Robin Hood?Stealing from the poor and giving away to the poor. Grin

There are desperate and naive people who think that they could win this "giveaway".

I see this from another angle, if I wanted to hide some of this money and I wanted to make it more difficult for the authorities to track, then I would do something like this. Let's say this hacker do not want to trust these mixer services and he wants to distribute it in a way that it makes it very difficult for the authorities to track, then you do it this way. You make several fake accounts on Reddit, and distribute the majority of this money to these fake accounts.

In the end, when this money gets tracked back to you, you can always use this "free giveaway" as a excuse to explain the money that you received. ^hmmmmm^ If you are clever enough to hack these coins, then you are also clever enough to hack email accounts or even Reddit accounts.

You can interpret this situation in many ways, but in the end it's pretty simple.

opt1. if giveaway is real you can win and do something good with the money, opposed to funds staying at hacker's side.
opt2  If it's not, then .. nothing .. literally nothing ..

In the end, you could just as well give funds back to original owners who it was stolen from, if such a thing can be proved at all.

That's human nature right there my friend nothing you can do about it. It's certainly not specific to the crypto world, although anonymity associated with Bitcoin means that more people are likely to give it a try. To be honest though I can't fault the hackers, they did what they're good at and succeeded, you can't expect everyone to behave nicely. And I doubt the cops will be able to do anything if someone actually wins the coins.

it doesn't really say anything about anything Cheesy you are too hard on yourself.

when people see a "free entry" giveaway of such a magnitude of course every sane person thinks it is scam but it costs you nothing to enter, only one post with your bitcoin address in it.

besides if you want to be hard on yourself you can check the wallet address and see that the funds has nothing to do with bitfinex hack they come from 2013
here is the origin: https://blockchain.info/tx/d5e3209464fb57b8355f08376865812bf4722e4fa99fb56a83a23432cec18c53 and many of these addresses are from a mining pool back in 2013

Weak hands have been complaining about missing out ever since bitcoin was $1 and never buy the dip.
Whales are those who keep buying the dip.

it is very likely that funds from hackers bitfinex. no one will give 1000btc in vain. you can clearly see that he made the initials name rekcahxfb = bfxhacker. he might show that he is a hacker bitfinex with making a reverse name.

Why should the winner care about their funds, if the funds are stolen then the police or government should try to contact the thief not the winner, we know that the winner does not know where these bitcoins comes from but should not be accused for anything or to confiscate the funds, it's simply unfair.

Yeah im not signing up for that just in the slim chance of receiving stolen money, but you never know how desperate people can be. If you are broke then you may sign up just in case.

In any case, I think this is obviously the scammer sending Bitcoin to himself.

The BTC so called community is not an Amish community Smiley  It's like Liberty Reserve community; based on "money talks". The rest of the things are just words in the wind Smiley  600k are more than welcome for any of us. Even you are millionaire 600K is a decent amount and you cannot refuse it just because there are supposed to be stolen Smiley

The BTC world is not a place for morality.

"IF" the funds are indeed coming from a marked address which is containing stolen funds then anybody who is receiving them is going to be in for a lot of trouble because it is not a 0.001-0.1BTC giveaway and nobody is giving away 600,000 USD for free to anybody else so you have to admit it would look suspicious!

i bolded the IF part because the address that bfx.... posted was not bitcoin coming from bitfinex.

I think the people who joined that giveaway was troll because it's obvious that the hacker won't give us anything just like what i did or he would send 1000 bitcoin to his clone account Roll Eyes
Also, it's obvious that government can track our IP, identity and 1K bitcoin (if the hacker really gave us 1K BTC).

I think only few people who really want to get that 1K bitcoin.

not hypocritical, I think everyone wants to get 1k bitcoin. but if I know it is the result of a hacker I probably would not be interested. I can feel when I'm losing money.

it's "free money" and we are all greedy. if we weren't, we wouldn't be here in the first place.

This is not entirely true for a good portion of this community.
