The channel just got silenced by the ops. Reason given: we want to talk about bitcoin.
Discuss.

Don't they have the bitcoin foundation forum that is a closed fortress for there discussions? This is hurting bitcoin so much, but what can we do besides stop everything learn python and C++ and start hacking on a client fork.
Yeah. We should start mining with a client that blocks transactions from these power grabbers. No but really, new people to bitcoin must feel really welcome when they can't even say hi on the chat channel that is most quoted in all documents / websites as the place to go to.

03:49 <@gmaxwell> I thought it would be nice to go and talk about bitcoin for once, instead of being flooded out by more north korea stuff. 03:49 <@gmaxwell> We were actually _unable_ to talk about bitcoin, to the point where d-dimer suggested we go to another channel. 03:49 <@gmaxwell> and I think thats nuts 03:49 < rikur> You probably thought wrong, unless you auto +v everyone who is authed in the channels and help new people to get started too 03:49 < rikur> gmaxwell: this is more nuts 03:50 < rikur> just because you and d-miner wanted to chat in a more peaceful environment, you blocked out 1k people 03:50 <@gmaxwell> I'll be removing the +m in probably 10 minutes or so when we complete doing this multisign tutorial. 03:50 < rikur> gmaxwell: I don't think that you should be able to just shut the channel because you're walking someone through a tutorial 03:51 < rikur> #bitcoin-tutorials? 03:52 < rikur> the very foundation of bitcoin is to counter censorhip. This is just so wrong.
Anyone else think that is is just plain stupid?

yeah you're right: when someone censors you, you should just give up and go do something else because free speech isn't worth the effort.

but censorship is different from tuning out the static, a spam a lot threat become static, they are not stopping any of you forming your own group anywhere else. They are not making you buy BTC or mine or anything else, they may be altering a modle you adopted without you input, and that needs an outlet to redress....

yeah you're right: when someone censors you, you should just give up and go do something else because free speech isn't worth the effort. that irc channel is popular because there are a few people in it that are popular. right? so those popular people have +o and everyone else does not. they decided they no longer wanted to read what you lousy peons had to say in their channel. at that point in time you could just message other people and create #bitcoin2. if you and others were interesting, popular, and otherwise awesome... your channel will become dominate. #bitcoin will be teh ghey channel. congratulations.. you are now back in middle school and high school mentality. perhaps it is time to /quit. you could create a blog, website, or anything.. and share your world view and thoughts on bitcoin to the whole internet. but nah.

the freedom of speech does not mean everyone has the right to shout over each other so much that nothing can be comprehended and the topics get distorted.
the freedom of speech would only be violated if there was no way to make a random off-topic room or a north korea room and allow anyone who was interested in those topics to move to a more suitable location.
when inside the bitcoin room, it can meander off topic to a degree, but remember if it starts to get manic, off topic beyond repair then some moderation has to be considered. there is nothing stopping you from messaging people to say "come to this more suitable room" and create your own community. you can always re enter the bitcoin room and talk bitcoin freely once you have finished the passionate off topics.
that is your freedom.
by the way im not a moderator or a foundation member, i am an outsider like everyone. i just dislike those who think that moderation to keep the peace is a bad think.
if your passionate about something. that is not the main topic. show your passion in a suitable location, you are sure to get followers.

I DO NOT TRADE OR ACT AS ESCROW ON THIS FORUM EVER. Please do your own research & respect what is written here as both opinion & information gleaned from experience. many people replying with insults but no on-topic content substance, automatically are 'facepalmed' and yawned at

Every IRC channel I'm a regular in with >100 users goes offtopic constantly, so I have to spend way too long skimming hours of OT scrollback, where in the case of bitcoin, it should have been in #bitcoin-offtopic or #bitcoin-101 instead.
What's the point of having these specific channels registered and staffed if people refuse to /join #them, even when specifically, repeatedly, asked to move?

Saying that you don't trust someone because of their behavior is completely valid.
