Hi,

I have a wallet encrypted with a password that I last used 3 years ago. After 3 years I downloaded the bitcoin code wallet onto my windows 8 desktop and just copied the wallet.dat file in the bitcoin wallet working directory.

After I started the bitcoin core wallet app and the sync finished I can see no wallet encryption and it says there's not bitcoins in the wallet but I had some.

Do I need to update my wallet.dat file to the latest version or something?

Please help
Thanks

Where exactly did you copy your wallet.dat to? If you're using windows it's should go under appdata/bitcoin or appdata/roaming/bitcoin by default. To get to appdata, press the Window button + R and enter "appdata".

Hi,

I copied it to the right place as my bitcoin client data dir is in a custom place. I replaced the default wallet.dat that was there after I installed the client with my wallet.dat

So no update is required for wallet.dat since 3 years ago?

Please let me know

You've either not copied your old wallet.dat into the correct location for the new install or you have copied the wrong wallet.dat file into the correct location as the wallet encryption will not simply disappear; you will still need to enter a password to access the wallet.

Ok, thanks for the confirmation, I guess I have the wrong wallet.dat file and I need to find the correct one. I thought since 3 years the format of the wallet.dat file changed as well and it needed updating but I guess this is not the case

You may still need to update the wallet, depending on the version that you last used. If you just start Bitcoin Core with the -upgradewallet option that will upgrade it.

Good advice above, but whatever you do, keep multiple backups.
