the first thing is there are more paypal and usd dollar user compare to bitcoin users, ebay amazon or any big shop still haven't see the potential of bitcoin, and i think they are afraid of the negative reputation of bitcoin which will affected their reputation, but i believe one day ebay will be accepted bitcoin, if bitcoin got a good reputation and there are already a lot of people use bitcoin

ok they are many paypal users but still they are countries that dont allow paypay or allow in some point for example in my country i can only store money on paypal i can purchase or withdrawn them later this is bad but when i send bitcoin to my money account goes smooth with no issues

still think that in no so far future i mean in next few years we will see bitcoin accepted on ebay and amazon

Hi guys,
what would be the pros and cons of letting customers pay with bitcoins on Ebay? (especially if the transaction is cross-border)

Pros :

~ It gives you a alternative, if other payment options are not available to you for some reason.
~ Bitcoin has been the best performing currency for many years
~ You pay less for the transaction, due to smaller fees < No banks or remittance services needed >
~ Cross border transfers < remittance > is cheaper.
~ The transactions are fairly quick and you do not have to wait for bank transfers to go through to fund your account.
~ You can use them as a reliable Escrow services.

Cons :

~ You will have to rely on eBay as a third party and Bitcoin was designed not to use third parties.
~ eBay will add fees for their services, which will make Bitcoin transactions more expensive.
~ eBay can manipulate transactions, like they are doing now. < centralized control >

would you include in the cons that generally a bitcoin is worth a lot of money in national currencies (for example 1 bitcoin is almost 670 euros) and so the common consumer is not willing to change this much money?

I also thinking about why eBay do not accept bitcoin as payment still. China is number one by bitcoin users, but maybe cause of they are the most on eBay but not all all they don't accept bitcoin still? In many countries people just didn't hear about bitcoin, but eBay could stay for such sellers and buyers other options as payPal.

Most ebay items has paypal's money refund service, with bitcoin payments this service isn't possible, you can't get any information about payer, so it causes many problems and also bitcoin's price is changing and maybe it will hurt ebay's earnings. Also there are number of factors why they don't accept bitcoin and also there are many people who prefer paypal and for them and for ebay it's not problem. Ebay don't needs much headache. Also bitcoin is used in dark marketplaces and ebay isn't like that and if they accept it, I think it will hurt their reputation.

Some reasons behind lack of eBay bitcoin adoption:

1. PayPal is owned by eBay - and both these companies are not here necessarily to make world a better place but to gain profits.
Introducing bitcoin payments on eBay would cut their profits rather substantially (sellers are paying fee: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction).

2. There are more than 192 million PayPal's accounts active worldwide. Meanwhile bitcoin is used by less than 10 million people.

3. You need chargeback option on eBay. Bitcoin is not giving you that.

the only reason is the number 3 because it is the crucial part of buying something online from a random person and also the fact that not enough people are using bitcoin.

the amount of fees you are paying with bitcoin (which is a lot less than any other method of payment) is enough to encourage anyone to start using bitcoin but sadly some people fail to see this.

I think the only reason Ebay will never accept bitcoin on the first place is that you can't do a chargeback when you do a purchase and something happens with the stuff you bought. Also Ebay and Paypal are the same companies, Paypal see the bitcoin crytocurrency as a treat and I don't think it will accept it as a payment form.

That my opinion, the future will tell Wink

nah ebay actually must create some sort of escrow inside their commercial website rather than just counting on transaction's chargeback,it will more beneficial for both buyers and sellers and also decreasing the amount of someone getting scammed by fraudster, charge back is not really effective by the way

That is certainly true, as I think ebay is included into a third party. because they only provide facilities for using it, they are not involved in taking and sending money or goods bought. Although ebay does not use escrow system, but their confidence is a good thing and something everybody already knows it so nobody need doubt

If you are a buyer charge back policy is a good reason to prefer paypal instead of bitcoin payment. If sellers has the possibility to give buyers a significant amount of discount this would be a good reason to prefer bitcoins. Furthermore, as we know many times where the goods are coming from the other point of the planet there are problems regarding the delivery time and the product status.

On the other side if you are the seller and with these money you must pay your supplier (raw material or what ever) you are not sure if he will accept bitcoin as payment. Even worse if there is a 'hostile' environment regarding the bitcoins sellers prefer bad buyers instead of troubleshooting in their daily transactions.

I think that's less of a reason for Ebay not to accept Bitcoin.
I personally think it could just be that Bitcoin doesn't have enough 'marketshare' and possibly the fact that they have really close ties with Paypal.

that is true IF ebay was thinking about his customers and what they want. but in reality ebay is thinking about how much more money they can earn. and since apparently paypal is owned by ebay, accepting bitcoin (adding escrow or allowing bitcoin on their platform) means they are shooting themselves in the leg, and no business will allow that to happen.

Well the big question is till when ebay will be able to ignore bitcoin as payment processor, they can use a third companie to exchange bitcoin into fiat, as namecheap does now, bitcoin is getting more and more costumers, and at 2020 im expecting bitcoin became an asset like gold, where people will invest their savings.

For a long time I have been reading that it's China who controls the Bitcoins market. 60-80% of sellers on eBay are from China. So my question is why don't they accept payments in Bitcoin and why they insist on the paypal only? Shouldn't they be changing according to times? Or they can't change due to regulations?
I think they want simple payment system instead of many other ways of payment .
Secondly it may be possible that they may give option of bitcoin payment but i think they are looking to design such types of program to make clear way to make bitcoin payment .

nah, i think it is mostly because there is not enough interest in using bitcoin on ebay for trades.

because no matter how many options there are, as long as there are people on their site who are requesting bitcoin payment option they will add it because they wouldn't want to lose users.

There is a FOMO brewing...

The reason for Ebay to not accept Bitcoins could be because of the sellers themselves and their business model. Majority of them would object about receiving Bitcoins and it's only good for the Bitcoin economy when Ebay doesn't automatically and instantly convert the Bitcoins to fiat. Usually a lot of second hand goods are sold on Ebay and there may be refunds for damaged products or misleading products which would make it difficult for Ebay to handle when a payment is made with Bitcoins. According to me, if they wanted to implement Bitcoin they could create a Bitcoin wallet system and tie a single Bitcoin address to a user, but that would take a while or tie up with a Bitcoin payment processor that transacts Bitcoin payments instantly on offchain. Also, like many have mentioned in here they already have a massive Payment system as their child product called Paypal, and they readily have that running top notch. Paypal also is a bit controversial about Bitcoins and they seem to be very competitive to other payment providers and systems.

Sellers take the risk? I do know bitcoin changes daily but wich risk you talking about, bitcoin looks stable at the moment, and has all to keep growing over the next years soo making business with bitcoin now, might turn the same history as pizza in the past, sure not in the same proportions but a huge advantage. People if had choise to pay 1 dollars as fee instead 10 dollars i really doubt people wouldnt change their options to bitcoin even with the volatility issue.

it has to do with the buyers taking the risk not the seller, in fact it is known that paypal protect the buyer and bitcoin not, and this is the reason why ebay like paypal and not bitcoin, but i think they should come up with escrow like with purse.io and then it will be possibile to use bitcoin on their platform
