I've been bothered for quite some time over all crypto-currencies with bad name choices. If you know just a little bit about global product marketing you know that a product name and visuals are almost as vital as the product itself. If you want global acceptance you must understand not all countries in the world speaks English, and there are many others aspects as well. I always thought that Bitcoin is a really well thought name and maybe there actually was put some thought into it before release.. It's easy to say in most languages, you understand what it is, easy to remember, unique, works in plural, tech, etc.

Not knowing much about these coins themselves I put together two lists with the following criteria:
  • Easy to pronounce in non-English (in my case Swedish)
  • Nice flow
  • Unique
  • Awesomeness

Nice
  • Bitcoin
  • Monero
  • Dash
  • Lisk
  • Nxt

Stupid
  • Ethereum
  • Augur
  • Dogecoin
  • Waves
  • MaidSafeCoin
  • HoboNickels
  • Colossuscoin V2
  • Asiadigicoin
  • Unobtanium
  • Groestlcoin

See the difference? If I would invent my own world wide super money I would go for [Unibit]. Without any deeper thought I think it beats most of the 700+ different currencies currently known. Come on, it's not that hard!

Ethereum also contains a "th" sound, which most non-English speakers are unable to produce.

There ain't no Revolution like a NEMolution.  The only solution is Bitcoin's dissolution! NEM!

I see what you are saying, I don't think a coin's name dictates if they will be successful or not. Might be a small piece of the equation.

No coin, except Bitcoin on a very small scale, has gone global mainstream yet. Maybe the name is more important than you know.

Totally agree. The name is fundamental to the "brand" of the project.

A good name has to be easy to pronounce and in the same time pass the radio test. It gets even better if you can visualize it. In my opinion waves is a perfect example of that. Augur doesn't even pass the radio test and lisk and monero you can't visualize either of them.

One or two syllable names are best, e.g. Steem or Dash.

Names which immediately convey the correct meaning to the uninformed by word-of-mouth are best for viral marketing and recall, e.g. Dash, Bitcoin, Monero, Facebook, Twitter, Iota, and Reddit.

Names which are easy to pronounce and spell are best, i.e. not Tumblr, LBRY, nor Ethereum!

Names which are unique enough to be brandable as unique and memorable are best, e.g. Iota, Twitter and Monero.

Names which aren't portmanteaus of an oft-repeated prefix or suffix are best, e.g. not ___cash nor ___coin names, although Z is kinda cool so maybe Zcash is brandable.

(Z for Nissan 300Z fast car, for Zoro, for Zero, etc ... but Zcash probably only has appeal as a name within our community, not the masses)

Ah yes that is another important factor for naming is that it shouldn't have incompatible alternative meanings.

Dash was intended to mean fast, but it has alternative meanings "a little bit", "character in Morse code", and "detergent brand name".

wow factor when you mention. Smiley Unique sounding is also ok, it leaves the person becames curious.

There is also the aspect of who is the target market. If the target are speculators for a pump & dump, or to be adopted by geeks only, then a geekcool name such as Ethereum is sufficient.

But if you want this to appeal to the mass adoption case, then a name such as Ethereum probably isn't going to work. Most females are probably not going to be turned on by Tesla's ether.

Edit: LBRY is probably another geekcool name.

Someone make a poll for the best name in crypto. Allow us to select more than one choice (maybe up to 3)?

there's a lot of unworldliness in crypto as a whole, starting with bitcoin itself. only someone up to their eyes in computing would release 21 million coins for a whole planet. sure, they're divisible. they should've been a smaller denomination from minute one. that's how most normal humans think and always will.

most of the names reflect that too. i can't see donald trump complaining that mangocoin reserves are too low so the us treasury is switching to wild beast bitcoin while their foreign aid budget is gonna be diverted into boolberry.

I remember a site that graphically, in the form of spiral diagrams epitomizes 5 years of altcoin evolution. Last time I checked it a year back, it had all alts released between 2011-2015, literally all of them, 600+ or so alts, with animated annotations and nice grouping into classes depending on hashing algorithms, features and manifestos. Anyone remembers whats the site name?

Ardor is one of the stupidest names anyone gave to a coin. Nxt was a bit weird but it became popular on the basis of being one of the first 2.0 coins. Ardor is ridiculous, and the 2.0 coin hype has run its course. The nxt devs must be betting that giving their new coin one of the stupidest names ever will make it a winner.
