Stupid coins: The importance of the name

I somewhat agree from a marketing perspective but for coins created in the spirit intended and for a community it plans to serve, why not a name that suits them? Perhaps marketability is not paramount to some.

I'm thinking of Dogecoin here, whose name is deliberately funny and non-serious. The doge was meant and still is fun!

Unibit seems stupid too, look at the recent Ardor project by NXT foundation, it sound nice but some people do not buy into the name. All these are subjective

Ethereum has a real good name. Even better than Lisk to my taste. You know, there's even much worse than MaidSafe.

I agree with the first post, and think that the name is almost same important as the tech and development, a lot of people first of all likes to identify themselves with the object

I'm pretty sure none of these shitty names get said aloud.  There aren't two human beings withing shouting distance of each other that are interested in any of them at any given time.

I think Dash is a stupid name, but I like the coin.  I much preferred Darkcoin.  Yeah, Doge is very stupid.  Monero is stupid.

Pretty much anything other than bitcoin (and I do also hate that name) is stupid.

I more or less agree. It is not like anyone is going to be saying to anyone within shouting distance, "hey hit me up with some Mooneuro bro".

Btw, I have decided to name the currency of my new project "Shares" (as in the dual meaning of sharings and shares of the pie). We have a set of back up names if the community ends up not liking that.

But the project name remains secret. I think it will be first name in our ecosystem you will like. It rivals Twitter IMO. I paid $325 for the *.us TLD variant of the 5 characters, one syllable domain name.

Anyway, I don't necessarily think that Monero is the best possible name, but I don't know of an existing cyptocurrency name that is better, and looking down the top 100 list, I don't see any, other than possibly Bitcoin within the context in which it was created (no other such coins existed).

On the name, I don't think Monero means to most people what you all assume it does in your head.

Also it is 3 syllables with a portmanteau that can be misinterpreted in many different ways, e.g. Mo-nero, Mon-ero, Mone-ro. Facebook, Viber, and I-on are only 2 (Ion might be 1?).

It is not a horrible name. It is much more brandable than any name with ___Coin or ___Bit.

But you are going to have to teach people what it means. Monero is not high tech. No way. It sounds like some cultural heritage from Europe (such as a castle) being applied to computers doesn't make any sense. It is at best associated with fiat money and old world corruption we are trying to get rid of. It will not appeal to the youth and the people who want new, cool, tech. The youth want new stuff not the crap of their grandparents. They want swiping and vibering, not tours of museums in Old Europe.

NEM name gets said outloud by millions of people.  Maybe 100+ million

It means no in Hungarian and it is a food in Vietnam.

I think the name of coins is important. It can be subjective according to the goal or intent of the developer.  The name being good or stupid depends on the person's opinion.  The proof about that is the following reply after you posted.  Not knowing what it meant may make the name uncool but digging deeper will more likely think you are wrong about your first impression.

If a new coin is really a breakthrough, then the name might not matter.
Bitcoin would have still succeeded even if it was named as "Decentralized Digital Token" 
The same is the case with Ethereum. In the case of me-too coins, I think the name plays a role.

LOL yeah...Ethereum quite good to hear. There are funny soundng coins in Yobit too. There is also TIT  coin  Whatever the name as long as it has a good features and a large follower or community is a good coin. The good name is bonus for me.
