The hoops they have to go through now is too much.  I want to offer a bitcoin button on one of my sites, but noone is gonna bother paying with it if it takes some crazy stuff to get them.   We need convenience.

IDEA: MAKE EVERY SMALL BUSINESS A BITCOIN EXCHANGE - WHAT DO YOU THINK??

I think he's talking about making it easier for users to get bitcoins in the first place.

I agree, but because of anti-money-laundering laws it is difficult to do legally in the US.

Anyone who wants to sell a good or service for coins can do it in a minute with mybitcoin or mtgox. For a little more effort they can automate it.

Can we start a page somewhere that people can list themselves as available to buy bitcoins from in person with their zip code or city or something?

Genius idea.  We need street bitcoin traders.  That will actually make it possible.

The problem is the customer that does not have any coins yet.  How can he easily get them?

Adding on brocktice's idea - what if we would get normal everyday stores to sell bitcoins for cash and vica versa?  'I'd like a bread and 50 bitcoins please'.
In the end all the money thats being circulated would be replaced by bitcoins!!

Reminds me of something I saw in the Philippines...

In a dusty little stall in the corner of the market sits a woman with a cell phone.  If one of the locals wants to buy a few minutes of airtime or a bundle of text messages for the equivalent of about a quarter, they give a coin to the girl, type their number into her phone, and she sends them the airtime.  The whole transaction takes about 30 seconds, and the woman makes a living by taking a small percentage of the transaction.

http://randomwalker.info/misc/ccs-location-privacy.pdf

What would really work is a privacy aware proximity app for a mobile so that you know when your friends are near you but the location is encrypted for everyone else.

Then exchanging bitcoins would look like two people meeting for a coffee...when in reality they are internet banking!

http://crypto.stanford.edu/locpriv/

This was released not long ago it has an android client. I think it should be part of a bitcoin toolkit for your phone then we can setup physical drops.

Quote
We study privacy-preserving tests for proximity: Alice can test if she is close to Bob without either party revealing any other information about each other's location. We describe several secure protocols that support private proximity testing at various levels of granularity. We introduce the concept of location tags generated from the physical environment in order to strengthen the security of proximity testing. We implemented our system on the Android platform and report on its effectiveness. Our system uses a social network (Facebook) to manage user public keys. We argue that for proximity testing, social networks are better suited for managing user keys than traditional PKI.

Great idea, let us know when you have it ready.  I'll start, my zip code is 40219.

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

This community is still too sparse to support a face-to-face economy. Maybe a good place to start the first local Bitcoin economy would be a university campus.
