I've got a new 15" MacBook with 2 GHz Intel Core i7.

All 8 cores generate only like 4 khash/s with RpcMiner.app.
Even my much older Intel Core 2 Duo is capable to generate at least 6 khash/s and that one has 6 cores less.

What is going wrong? (I know that this kind of mining is not effective but its for free.
Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

Was your Core2Duo also a MacBook? Could be the app.

I get ~1.2MHash/s on my i5-430M on W7, but it varies greatly with the use of the computer. It's also not really "free" unless you are not using your computer, because CPU mining usually slows your computer greatly (GPU mining does not, unless you're gaming).

Nah, the Core2Duo is a PC.

I also have an 2008' MacBook but I don't bother to even try that.

Don't even bother to use your CPU for mining, it's simply not efficient enough. You will pay more for electricity than you will earn from bitcoins. Search the forums.

But you use the Mac's CPU heavily and thus have higher risks of parts failing quicker.

Well, nobody can keep you from doing it, but then you're destroying a nice MBP and steal power for some lousy cents/month.

You're probably right.
I'll still mine the GPU a little.

Upgrading to OSX Lion as I heard rumours it may improve the performance (15 MHash/s currently at low temperature).

With best CPUs today you can get something like 0.05 BTC/day. Worthless...

I thought that this bitcoin mining should be done on the GPU, I tried on my CPU and it was horrendous.
