I'm watching a transaction come through, still pending, but it's showing more than 686,000 confirmations. Why does the blockchain require that many transactions? It seems completely over-necessary, which makes me believe the system lack efficiency. Do we have that many miners trying to vie for the same transaction confirmation (is the miner network that large)? The transaction was for less than BTC0.015.

Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks.

more than 686,000 confirmations.
Impossible. There are currently only 448,582 blocks.

Why does the blockchain require that many transactions?
By "the blockchain", do you really mean "blockchain.info"? They're notoriously unreliable.

So i see two things I need to clarify:

  • This transaction was sent to an account I have with Coinbase, and in the transaction details with Coinbase they state "686370 confirmations", this statement is a hyperlink
  • When I click on the hyperlink I get the full transaction details and see that the transaction actually has 11 confirmations (from btc.blockr.io

What is Coinbase referring to by their "686370 confirmations" statement?

Thanks.

Coinbase and such are not real block explorers. I checked your transaction and there is only 12 confirmations.

This seems to be a technical error, you get things clarified in a short if you could write a statement about the associated issue to the support executive to sort out the problem.

I also heard Roger Ver invest in blockchain.info  Angry. Don't trust this rascal. Better stick to another service

It is just a technical error or a glitch in their system. There are even a time when transactions does not appear on blockchain.info but it is visible on blockcypher. Blockchain.info has many clients and I believe they have the most users among all web wallet hosts online. Though they are unreliable but when it comes to protection form hackers they are very good at it. As of this moment that I am typing blockchain, info is again experiencing technical problems or it is just my internet why I cant access the site as of this moment.

Thanks all for the responses. We've talked this through enough. Perhaps there was a glitch on the Coinbase side. There's no need to discuss further, I've been paid and I've received my answer that there aren't an incredible number of confirmations required for a small transaction.

I appreciate the quick response. Thanks.
