Mining With My Laptop

I recently got a pretty powerful laptop with a 1060 gpu, but mining on it turns close to no profit, and overheats the device. Im looking to start mining for fun, but dont want to invest too much money. Therefore using a USB miner seems like the perfect option. However, will mining with a usb miner on my laptop still damage and overheat my PC?

Not if you connect the miner to a powered hub that's plugged into a wall socket. But you will still lose money, sadly.

Laptop for mining was definitely not good idea. Looking at the current difficulty level and overall volume, mining with proper bitcoin miners-hardware are best suited for cause. I would suggest to check the mining[1] section of this forum. You would get better answers there.

May be you can earn as well as learn about mining if you try some newly arrived altcoins. Still better, don't try mining with your lap and as above said, you messy try with power hubs!

Yeah, mining simply isn't worth it at this point unless you have dedicated hardware such as ASICs and cheap power. Mining on a laptop is a sure fire way to overheat and damage the laptop. And a USB miner will be quite slow at mining and you'll likely end up losing money anyhow. Not worth the hassle.

I'm not looking to make a living, quite funny though. But im just looking for some extra momey, even $4 a day is plenty.

That 4$ a day won't mean a thing if your laptop breaks a week later.
That's what people keep forgetting (from what I see), laptops breaks easily and not very easy to repair.

Or if you're talking about bitcoin mining... Don't even try it with laptop or even a high spec PC.

Just to put things in perspective, at the current difficulty and BTC price, you'll need about 6 TH/sec (Terahash, aka 6000 GH) to produce $4 per day. That also assumes your electricity is free and you are willing to run whatever hardware you have flat out, 24/7.

None of the above even remotely fits a laptop. It cannot even hit 1/10000 of the hashrate, and it's not built for 24/7 operation flat out. Laptops do short bursts of computation just fine, but not several minutes, much less hours all day. Attempting this will produce literally nothing in terms of BTC, and will shorten the life of you laptop significantly. A desktop might not have it's life shortened a lot, but it's still woefully underpowered.

Read lots of the threads here to see what you actually need if you want to mine BTC.

Sorry, I was being silly. But in all seriousness it would be hard to make any profit at this time with a normal computer. You could join a mining pool and combine your computing power with others, but you may just burn out your laptop for a few bucks. Literally a few bucks.

Having said that, it may be a good way to learn about bitcoin and that may be worth something. Check this calculator to get a sense of profits/costs.

If you use a USB port on the laptop to control an ASIC device (like the Gridseed Blade and Orb units, or the Antminer U3, among MANY others) it won't put significant stress on the laptop.

 I don't know of any current device (except POSSIBLY the Avalon 721/741 units and the Baikal) that are USB-interface and profitable with electric that isn't free, but Sidehack has a project in the works using BitFury chips that should change that.

 As you're already discovered, laptops are NOT designed for high-usage 24/7 operation like mining requires.

Even a newbie like me knows by now that the laptop-mining thing is a no go situation. The laptop is going to be destroyed.

We all know that mining with home computers or laptops isn't an option for bitcoin mining but seems like it isn't an option even for a bitcoin clone in the first day of it's launching, why is that? in the first 2 years of bitcoin mining with a desktop computer was possible without even joining a pool.

Core wallet hasn't had the ability to mine in many many years, but then you could just be trying to raise your post count.

that's very true, even if you have your solar panels that will compensate for your electricity bill..
in the end, you will regret of even trying to think about laptop-mining. a lot is at stake for this endeavor!

It useless to mine on your laptop. You are wasting electricity as well as burning your laptop for no good. I have tried to mine Zcash and Zclassic on my old Hp Probook 4520s. I get like 1 or 1.5 sols and I stopped after a week of mining. Now I just use it to fold protein or Folding @home, not to make money, but out of my love to fold  Perhaps your should give it a try!

I am really amazed that you could mine using minergate for two weeks and that too 24x7  using a laptop,when ever i tried mining using my gaming laptop the system would over heat and shut down automatically within a hour or two and how come you were able to mine for two weeks round the clock and i would not risk my expensive lap for pennies.

I imagine this was an expensive laptop, so I think you must be twice as careful with it... Mining with a laptop or even with a desktop computer are not as profitable activities as they were a few years ago. In addition, laptop has always been a problematic choice for mining. If your equipment does not have a good cooling system, this is not recommended.
