I would start digging deeper into these forums, from the surface it looks that anything beyond 3 cards is giving issues, but since I didn't encounter this problem yet myself (though next rig might get 4 or 5 cards) i didn't dug deeper. So yea answer is somewhere out there, but the safest bet ofc is always to just stick with 3x3

I mean I read enough threads where people had 5 or more without to many problems. Anyone running 5 cards can chime in?

I think the PSU is more than adequate as all the reviews I read the cards didn't go above 200Watts on full load, so that's 1K for 5 cards, and 300 for the mobo and cpu. I have this case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517013With a big 250MM fan and 2X 120MM fans, do you think there will be to much heat in the case? Or would it be ok?

Looks like im going to go with 3x3 build. Do you know If I need 3 x16 slots or can the other pci slots support the 7950 such as x1,x4?

I can vouch for 1x to 16x extenders working for mining on 7970s.

so I need extenders? Can't just plug in to a 1x slot right?

Depends on the 7950 I just bought some HIS 7950's they used almost 300 watts at stock. The only solution was flashing the bios. Five 7950's will almost surely need at least one/maybe two powered pcie risers. I have one motherboard which won't even reliably initialize 3 7970's without it I think the PSU is more than adequate as all the reviews I read the cards didn't go above 200Watts on full load, so that's 1K for 5 cards, and 300 for the mobo and cpu. cablesaurus is the only place that sells them otherwise you can make it from a regular extender by cutting a couple wires off with an exacto-knife and soldering a molex connection on the end. Search for the how to in the forums if you want to try it

so I need extenders? Can't just plug in to a 1x slot right? Correct. The 1x slot on the motherboard would require an additional slot in the connector on the card that doesn't exist for it to be seated. That and most motherboards have other components 'behind' the 1x slots that would keep them from being inserted as well.

It's ok I just changed a few things around and got a mobo with 3 x16 slots. I really wish I could of made the 2x5 rig work as it gave me an extra card for mining, but too big of a hassle. I'm surprised no one has made a mobo that actually accepts 5-7 GPUS directly on the mobo without pci extensions.
Now any threads or links on how to run the multiple gpus? on cgiminer? Will it detect automatically and use them?

No board will have space on it to handle 5 doubles slot cards.

yeah I went with 3 rigs with 3 cards each. Can someone tell me which software to use guiminer or cgminer do they automatically pick up the cards? or do I have to mess around with settings?

I just started a few days ago after looking at a few different options. Nice rig!
