The famous Tails OS used by Snowden is an example. They added native Electrum support which is a great idea, but a distro that added more bitcoin stuff should be cool, but it would lose the privacy of a distro like tails.

I would much rather use Tails, because it has been around much longer and it is nice and small. It has a Electrum Bitcoin Wallet built in by default, but you have to enable Persistence to use it. I have used it for a while now, and I like the increased anonymity that is also a big part of it. I am not keen on running untested DistroS when it comes to my money matters.

i read about this a while ago, and while i find it interesting i do not find it safe. because most important of all we are talking about money and when money is involved there is all kinds of shenanigans that scammers pull and it is hard to trust. and besides a whole distro for bitcoin? what i need is any old distros, even light ones like puppy and a wallet nothing else matters.

My instinct is to mistrust it. If you've got a machine that is capable of running a full node, then you might as well use a proper version of Linux. If you are going to use a web wallet, then you don't need a machine just for Bitcoin.

I already read about it a few months ago but I decided to not use it as I've seen some complains and accusations and you shouldn't use it either. I mean there is Tails which is considered as one of the best Linux distributions out there and It got tested by multiple people , I rather use that then something not known to the public.

You may be right. It's not easy to trust because it's a new distribution for the moment. It may be more logical to use it after it is generally accepted by Linux users. I wonder what Richard Stallman thinks about this distribution.

Very true. I'm a linux user too, I've been part of a distro development few years back to which I'm part of the designing xwindows. Its a good experience but when it comes to money, i have to say distro devs aren't paid. Money could be an issue to they may ask btc or maybe doing some AUTO which bits of your btc goes to their wallet as donations. Some distro devs earn through the default browsers ad. Read the terms careful when you install the OS, there may have some fine prints there

Tails may perform as well as this distribution, but from the features it is clear BitKey has several pre-installed tools that save you time, which is one of the most important factors when setting up a distribution. My question to someone who has used BitKey already is, how much is it autoconfigured? Is it just a bunch of pre-installed tools or does it have any autoconfiguration/script that REALLY saves you time?

What's wrong with just using Ubuntu, Mint, or Debian?

There is nothing wrong. The linux distributions that you says are popular systems. BitKey is a debian based linux system for distribution. There are many different distributions in the Linux world. Each distribution has its specific features. Some distributions are developed for a specific purpose only. Scientists working at Cern, for example, use Scientific Linux. Kali Linux uses a security guard who deals with penetration testing. If privacy is very important to you, you will use Tails. These distributions are systems designed for the relevant field. It comes with software tools that are mainly used in that area. BitKey comes with the basic tools that people who use Bitcoin for distribution need. This is the exit goal.

Usually with linux IF there is something wrong, the devs are really quick to find it What's wrong with just using Ubuntu, Mint, or Debian?
It is based on Debian with LXDE, similar to Lubuntu (ubuntu+lxde). Debian is the mother of thousands of others distro and one of the most stable OS you can see. Ubuntu is made with Debian. Mint is made using ubuntu and so Debian. There are maybe +150 OS made with Debian

Yeah, I know all that. Was just wondering. I use Bitcoin Core, so distribution doesn't really matter. I did notice that BitKey has some sort of cold-offline wallet thing, so maybe it's something similar to Armory but it's a distribution specialized for this purpose. Or, you could think of it as one giant wallet app. I've used Kali and Tails.

It is nice to have an operating system that is only developed to use bitcoin. But is this operating system really safe? Linux is an open source system. Has the source code of the BitKey system been examined? Can people trust this system?

I prefer using a major distro linux rather than new one, you just need to allocate a lil time to set it up. For someone who does not have time (and knowledge) to set it up maybe its worth to give a try. But yea, you know, there is (huge) money involved, please be careful with your actions.
