No. Nowadays you need expensive specialized equipment in order to mine any substantial amount of Bitcoin. You also need low electricity prices in order to turn a profit.

A normal desktop with intergrated graphics card? It is impossible to make anything with that. You would need a medium sized and powered desktop to be able to handle the power supply to have a dedicated graphics card to make it worth your while to be able to mine anything even equal to the amount of electricity you would be using to mine. All in all. It is not worth it to compete with asic miners. They have any desktops without the highest gpu out done.

Expensive not necessarily, you can buy secondhand parts if some conditions apply. 1) don't buy crap. some ASICs are of limited durableness, falling apart. Take a dive into the "Mining" section before you believe any offer to be "cheap" 2) take a close look at your power costs. Those are the bigger factors next to hardware costs. Can you use the heat resulting from running this equipment somehow? And if it's just standing in the garage heating that room. If you save on fuel oil the numbers are changing vastly. Most of the equipment will not need a desktop PC on standby, except for monitoring and BTC wallets storage.

With a normal or expensive desktop you cannot mine bitcoins. However with a latest generation PC with 2 good cards , i.e GTX 1070 you can mine LBRY or ZCASH which are still profitable to mine with your graphic cards. 2 GTX 1070 should give you about 100-120 USD per month with the actual price of LBRY and the GTX 1070 hashing power of 350-400 MH/S each card when mining Lbry. Since for mining bitcoin is not possible through desktop but mining altcoin surely is, why don't you give a look here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=160.0You can put your computer to good use. In the end you can exchange altcoins you mine to bitcoin through exchanges like Poloniex.

It is possible to mine with a desktop that we use in our home. The risk is that you won't be getting big profit on this, as well the power consumption and relative technical issues will be more. Investing on Asics equipment is the good way to make a better earning.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?
ofcourse you can , but your main aim should not be bitcoin mining . With the bitcoin mining I am making 30-40$/ month without spent any money . First I started mining of bitcoin at cryptopia ( which is a exchange of altcoin with respect to bitcoin ) . I made download of software for CPU miner from the github and and tried with my pc it was working but I usually not using my pc open more then 1-2 hours . Then a idea comes in my mind ( that can be used by anyone ) . I created worker for the mining and puted the softwares in the about 10 computer of my area in cyber cafe ( use task manager to open your software of cpuminer .bat file ) Now I am making money easily from the mining . Here all the software are free to use , So try at once

I find this hard to belief, any proofs to back this up?

I'm about to ask about this same thing mate, because its really hard to get a percentage of btc when it came from mining and having 10 computers getting interesting if how this mining works and how did hr created the bat file i want to have it as well. lets wait if previous reply will answer us if how did he make it so we can also copy his method.

It is possible? Yes. But the question is it worth it? No.Its just a waste of time and your money. I dont think you will earn a decent btc, you will earn just a penny. Mining today uses specialized specification hardware design for mining not just an ordinary.desktop PC.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?
Yes it is. However, you need to spend expensive money im order for your computer to be capable in doing mining. It is better to invest in only software which only has a one purpose, to do mining. This is quite expensive to buy however, it has more hash that helps to gain bitcoin faster, it consumes less eneergy consumption for cheaper electric bill and lastly, it is durable than can last for years.

For everybody answering yes, yes but, yes with special software, yes with x number of PC's,... i leave following calculation: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Non-specialized_hardware_comparison1 PC with a new CPU and a decent GPU, having both the CPU (all cores) and GPU running 100% for mining, the above link quickly shows that the hashrate will be <3Gh/s (GPU) + <0.2Gh/s (CPU). It should be obvious that there is overhead, and that not everybody will run a PC with XEON's + an AMD 5870x6 GPU, but let's assume we have 10 PC's with such hardware. The total hashrate would certainly be lower than 50 Gh/s. Let's assume you're stealing the electricity from the cybercafé... , so you have no extra costs... Now let's punch in the numbers at a calculator: http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator/?h=50.00&p=2600.00&pc=0.00&pf=1.00&d=422170566883.83700000&r=12.50000000&er=1042.04050000&hc=0.00As you can see, even in this utopian example, at current diff, block reward and price, you would make a measly $11 A YEAR running 10 PC's equipped with XEON CPU's and a really good GPU 24/7 at 100% (both CPU and GPU). Now, let's conclude this topic by saying: NO, there is no way you can mine bitcoins using your computer... Not if you have the hottest gaming PC around, not if you steal resources from a cybercafé, not even if you install a cpu miner in your schools computer lab. The only thing that will happen is that you'll get suspended/fired/sued. The only way to mine BTC is having a really, really cheap electricity rate, and using the latest ASIC gear. Everything else is a waste of hardware, power and money.

Well said mate its possible to mine but nothing would worthy if we are talking about profitability its so difficult to find blocks and shared maybe even you took some months or years the value that you will going to get from your ordinary desktop would not be enough from your consumption.

A top-of-the-line PC will mine less than a dollar's worth of bitcoins in a year and cost hundreds of dollars in electricity.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?
If you are living from 2010 you can mine bitcoin but right now like other said you can not mine bitcoins right now you need to buy an highspeed hardware miner like miner s9 or avalon. or any available hardware that can mined with the speed of 8 th/s i think is enough if you are paying cheap electricity.. for now for normal desktop you can only mine altcoin POW algo that you can found in altcoin section..

No don't mine using your desktop because it will damage your desktop, because as of now bitcoin is mining at hard level to mature the coins. So you need to buy a specialized software for mining the bitcoins.
