Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?

the honest question and answer have been said already, yes it is possible to mine with your normal desktop but you will not earn anything as bitcoin mining has evolved to use much larger and expensive dedicated hardware.

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

It is conceivable to mine with a desktop that we use in our home. The hazard is that you won't get enormous benefit on this, also the power utilization and relative specialized issues will be more. Contributing on Asics hardware is the great approach to improve an acquiring

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?

Nope! Bitcoin solo mining is not at all profitable now. You need to have expensive rigs and not just one, a lot of it. Then only you will be able to mine bitcoin. Also consider the electricity cost in your area. At the end of the day, you will be paying out of your pocket. SO it is better to trade and buy bitcoin.

Alternatively, you can mine few altcoins through your computers and exchange it to bitcoin for good. This way you can still earn some profit. But direct mining through computer is not profitable and it may take 3 years to even find a single block.

It is possible but in my opinion don't try it. You can gain some profit but what about you electric bills ? Desktop's PC required high voltage power supply you might pay high bill also

Time of pc mining was many years ago. It seems you are new and don't have knowledge about bitcoin. Now with latest antminer s9, it's still hard to mine bitcoins and get profit plus electricity costs makes things harder. If you want, you can use desktop pc only for GPU mining, you need many video cards, better if you have AMD. Also solo mining is very hard and you need to be in pool.

It could take you 120k years to find a block. I am just guessing but I would not be surprised if the correct figure was twice that many years.

It is possible but you will not get any profit with usual cpu, you need to bought a great miner tool to earn money from mining, and mining is a difficult way to earn bitcoin unless you are going to build miner farm

Bitcoin mining is critical to handle by newbies. Desktop Cpu is not preferable to start the bitcoin mining. I have noticed that many thread were created in the beginners and help about mining process. Please move the thread the mining section. If any op of the other mining threads in this section noticed this. Please move to there.

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?

Mining Bitcoin nowadays with desktop is totally useless as the difficult level has gone up and their are so many miners which are costing the same can be used to mine it but even then their are other expenses like maintain the miner cooler system, electricity bill etc their are lot of expenses which makes it difficult to mien bitcoin and take profit.

So it is much better to mine the good Altcoins and sell them on exchange and get bitcoins against it.

Based on earlier posts from several other posters on this subject, I'll assume by now you probably know that you can't make any money mining bitcoin on your desktop. An alternative for you could be to invest into a legitimate cloud mining program, some of which you could start with only $ 10. But then if you decide to go this route, you would have to be extremely careful as most cloud mining operations are scams disguised as investments. So do your homework and never invest money you can't afford to lose. Just my 2 cents.

For everybody answering yes, yes but, yes with special software, yes with x number of PC's,... i leave following calculation:

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Non-specialized_hardware_comparison

1 PC with a new CPU and a decent GPU, having both the CPU (all cores) and GPU running 100% for mining, the above link quickly shows that the hashrate will be <3Gh/s (GPU) + <0.2Gh/s (CPU).

It should be obvious that there is overhead, and that not everybody will run a PC with XEON's + an AMD 5870x6 GPU, but let's assume we have 10 PC's with such hardware. The total hashrate would certainly be lower than 50 Gh/s.

Let's assume you're stealing the electricity from the cybercafé...  Tongue, so you have no extra costs... Now let's punch in the numbers at a calculator:

http://www.coinwarz.com/calculators/bitcoin-mining-calculator/?h=50.00&p=2600.00&pc=0.00&pf=1.00&d=422170566883.83700000&r=12.50000000&er=1042.04050000&hc=0.00

As you can see, even in this utopian example, at current diff, block reward and price, you would make a measly $11 A YEAR running 10 PC's equipped with XEON CPU's and a really good GPU 24/7 at 100% (both CPU and GPU).

Now, let's conclude this topic by saying: NO, there is no way you can mine bitcoins using your computer... Not if you have the hottest gaming PC around, not if you steal resources from a cybercafé, not even if you install a cpu miner in your schools computer lab. The only thing that will happen is that you'll get suspended/fired/sued.

The only way to mine BTC is having a really, really cheap electricity rate, and using the latest ASIC gear. Everything else is a waste of hardware, power and money.

Very clear and perfectly said about outcome of bitcoin mining through CPU/GPU so if anyone wants to start it then it is better to buy the ASIC gear with atleast 10 nos and a low electricity supply. or else it is much better to mine altcoin and be in profit from starting of mining itself

Well you could, but you won't make a profit.  You'll get tiny fractions of Bitcoin which are worth next to nothing and the cost of electricity will be higher.  The solutions are as follows:

Join cloud mining services which are supposed to use the hardware for you (not recommended as most of them turn out to be Ponzi scams and you can't know who to trust).

Buy several ASICs, set up your own electricity source, etc.  Bitcoin mining profitably requires A LOT of hardware and often barely breaks even with the cost of electricity so you need your own power which is VERY expensive.  You could get a huge loan which is risky or do it yourself which you might not afford to.

Go to the altcoin boards and find out how to mine altcoins (this might be risky because most altcoins are unstable, but you could try Litecoin or Ethereum or something).

Frankly, I wouldn't recommend mining cryptocurrencies unless you're pretty wealthy already and can afford to go big.

it is still possible but you get it will be very little, having lost by those who use you right tool designed specifically for mining bitcoin
I suggest, should not be used because your time will run out and the results are not comparable, the better your desktop is used to look for ways other than mining bitcoin, such as participating logo design competition, ico altcoin, trading and others

You need a special hardware like Asic Miner to mine using Bitcoin. Mining Bitcoin using a desktop computer is profitable only during the days when Bitcoin started. But If you insist to mine using a desktop computer for 24 hours , 7days a week, you will earn for as low as $0.03 per month. So its a total waste of time.
But this is still possible if you mine newly hatched coins, then later on trade this coins to Bitcoin.

Great idea thanks for sharing , so average how much you are earning now per month ?

Is it still possible to mine for bitcoins using a normal desktop computer nowadays?
ofcourse you can , but your main aim should not be bitcoin mining .
With the bitcoin mining I am making 30-40$/ month without spent any money .
First I started mining of bitcoin at cryptopia ( which is a exchange  of altcoin with respect to bitcoin ) .
I made download of software for CPU miner from the github and and tried with my pc it was working but I usually not using my pc open more then 1-2 hours .
Then a idea comes in my mind ( that can be used by anyone ) .
I created worker for the mining and puted the softwares in the about 10 computer of my area in cyber cafe ( use task manager to open your software of cpuminer .bat file )
Now I am making money easily from the mining . Here all the software are free to use , So try at once Wink

0.03$ per month is a little bit hyperbolic statement. If a Desktop has a good GPU like latest GTX series, it is possible have profit that exceeds on what you are expected, But the main disadvantage is the GPU is to expensive and almost same price to Ant Miner, So in typical condition, Miners bought Asic miner instead for Expensive GPU. I say this because i mine on my gaming desktop and have some profit. But that is not frequent i just setup my computer if I'm done playing on it.

Yes you can mine bitcoins using desktop but you need video graphics card to be able to mine at least few cents but if you are truly serious in mining bitcoin then you need a fully mining rig that can mine bitcoins well. Btw, mining is not a good choice in earning bitcoin if you don't have enough money to invest because there is a lot of things to consider like electricity, internet bills etc.

They said that it is really  possible to mine in such simple computer. Though others requires a fast computer with really high specs hardware.
There are a lot of downloadable softwares used for mining and videos to guide you using those applications. I think i will suggest the video tutorial of 99bitcoin on youtube.
It is really great and I think it will help you a lot like it helped me too.
