No mansion for me, more like a a hobbit house

but off the grid, hell yeah

You saying that because you don't have enough bitcoins or because you don't want to draw attention to yourself?

By the way, we all gonna be fucked if prices reach $111k, so better have enough coins.

I mean, we gonna be so fucked in the head from RICHes that we gonna have some difficulties figuring out spending, diversification, security.. and some fucking ass new standards that are out of our regular comfort zone... so gotta kind of tentatively start planning, so we not be so shocked...

Have any of you guys actually lived of grid?
It's not as fun as it sounds. When I was a kid we would often spend time in my grandparents summerhouse, with no electricity. You had to get up in the middle of the night to keep the fire going, you had to pump the water by hand, you had to heat the water on the fire, no shower, just a quick hand wash.

They later installed electricity and it was bliss, electric water pump and heating, and all that (but still no shower, they were the old generation who took a bath twice a week or so, the rest was hand wash).

I would love to live of grid, but you simply cant make enough electricity for electric heating, you would have to have a wood burner or oil burner for that. And that's not my cup of tea, except as a backup. Hopefully though, they will soon come up with some kind of high capacity battery that makes wind/solar possible as the only energy source.
Off grid doesn't mean roughing it.  That's off-rocker.  It's not terribly expensive to build a fully self sustaining dwelling that provides all of your water and some of your food.  Investigate Earthship building.  No, it doesn't have to be as hippie ugly as most examples.  Also, good solar has been around for a few years.   It just costs more than walmart solar.  Add geo, wind, hydro and hydrocarbon  as location dictates. Personally, I'm not counting cost as a major factor these days anyway.  Just have to find the right location. Within the next 2 years, it's happening!

Yes I have and the technology has come a long way.

A modern catalytic stove will easily keep the fire all night, nearly 24 hours as a matter of fact.  Personally I much prefer wood heat.  I currently live in town and I miss having fire in my life.

Flat plate collectors on the roof coupled with a heat exchanger on the stove for hot water, or on demand propane if you are lazy.

DC pump and some solar to run it.  It really isn't that hard.

For heat, if your house is so inefficient as to need it, a nice wood fired rocket mass heater is the clean and efficient way to go.

BTW,  building codes set a MINMUM insulation.  It shouldn't be taken as a fucking standard.  The waste in this society is mind boggling.

At the beginning of my crypto journey, I build a GPU rig, as it was something I was comfortable with (used to be a mad overclocker), and mined LTC.

I never mined BTC.

Now I'd like to. Not something large scale, and I know it might not be the best investment, I'd just like to have mined some BTC.

Do one of you know how to get an antminer S9 for a fair price ? Including from Bitmain, is there some kind of waiting list ?

Lots of scams around.

https://shop.bitmain.com/main.htm?lang=en

Sold out for now. But you can keep checking for a new batch. Just know Bitmain has recently only accepted Bitcoin Cash for their miners.

emc2 about to release it's own line of gpu algo miners ...no pre-order ~ in hand Wink weeeee

Of course, clearly you start by designing for off grid.  We aren't building your grandparents summer shack here.

I am really interested in the new homestead scale pellet mills, I think Himalayan blackberry mixed with whatever waste biomass I am producing anyway would burn hot as fuck.

Things have changed a lot. Now you can have solar panels efficient and cheap enough to power the whole house. Of course it depends on where you plan to live off the grid... better chose a place with good sun and warm weather so as your electrical needs are not that much and get easily covered (batteries are still somewhat expensive). Water system is also doable provided you have some near source (again, chose the location wisely).

That said... I find the idea of living off-the-grid a king of joke that is only possible because you are somewhat "parasiting" on the technical evolution and infrastructure of "the grid". And it is only a very finite number of people that can do it or otherwise the grid would crumble and we would all be miserable.

OTOH, The idea of just cutting from the electrical grid sounds very appealing to me. Even if living in the middle of a major city. Energy independency is a thing. We are almost to the point where it could be even cheaper than getting it from a third party.

With a proper rain catchment system a single house should be able to support its occupants on 8-10"  per year rainfall. 20-25cm.  That's not a lot, so I suppose it's rationed, but doable.  There aren't very many places that dry anyway, so the point is generally moot.  Where I live I think we get that in a day, from time to time Cheesy All you need is a place you can dig in the dirt, and not be flooded.  Don't forget security, view, and weather particular to your location.

...brokers of exquisite dreams and memories tested on the sensitized cells of junk sickness and bartered for raw materials of the will, doctors skilled in the treatment of diseases dormant in the black dust of ruined cities, gathering virulence in the white blood of eyeless worms feeling slowly to the surface and the human host, maladies of the ocean floor and the stratosphere, maladies of the laboratory and atomic war... A place where the unknown past and the emergent future meet in a vibrating soundless hum... Larval entities waiting for a Live One...

I'm looking at building a house and a wood stove is in the cards. I like the idea. If it ends up being too much work I can always put a wood pellets stove in its place, computer controlled and all. The house would be insulated enough to not need a big stove, but not passive, I don't like the idea of passive houses.

Hummm let me enjoy the moment ... 5-digits €-wake-up

Woke up early (in bed early last night), it was still 9990€. Then didn't check for a couple hours, until way past 10K€.

When I'm a BTC millionaire and can afford a nice flat downtown a big city I'll certainly buy one, then alternate between it and a large estate in the middle of nowhere, with my own landing strip to go with my airplane.

But living in a miniscule flat, hearing all the noise made by the street and other inhabitants, for a ridiculous amount of money and taxes compared to my limited wealth, no way.
