Unfortunately it is very natural. Here is how it works.

Human psychology exists on a spectrum. Each extreme is sort of a package deal. Normal people have a survival instinct. However in easy and safe times people with the opposite develop. These people have the opposite of a survival instinct - a sort of collective death drive. They want all the opposite things of what it takes for humans to survive. Such as break up families.
