partially OT, but bitcoin related:

Preamble: A serious bug in Z---h pool was discovered by a human white hacker working with Claude Opus 4.8.
Humans alone did not discover it for 4 years and the problem is so complex that Claude only finds it in 1/4 runs.
Result: Z---h price got cut in half in 24hr. It would take months to find out if any inappropriate token "printing" occurred in 2022-2026.

Suggestion: what if several non-bitcoin cryptos have hidden underlying problems discoverable by Claude, Codex or Mythos?
Could this, then, explain the carnage at least of the last few months in the ecosystem as a whole?
VB coin might be particular vulnerable, for example.

Something that we don't know yet: whether some Mythos/Claude/Codex discoverable bugs also exist on the current bitcoin code.
Mythos, for example, was released very narrowly, only to a few critical companies and three letter agencies.
If no bugs are found, it would be a tremendous boon to bitcoin, imho.

TL;DR AI "threat' to important open source software-is it real or exaggerated?

Haha, no surprise.

If you posted a time-lapse video with the stars moving in the sky, then I think I could precisely locate you. But a single photo of the stars doesn't contain enough information to do that... The only hope is the uniqueness of the surroundings, which don't look very unique in that photo.

I don't think even that would help much. Which is why the invention of accurate clocks was so important to navigation. An approximate latitude should be possible though.

If the exact datetime of the picture would be know (via EXIF data leakage), it would be a lot easier, but most image hosting services are stripping the metadata automatically.

Images posted to BTCTalk get proxied automatically so you lose all that anyway. It's a bit of a shame as at one point, I was thinking of custom views for ChartBuddy but it's understandable.

But just on the subject of EXIF data, there is (or was) a browser extension that would show EXIF data present in pictures and it was surprising what people were letting leak out, particularly with location data.

I am not too worried about the main bitcoin code as it has been under intense scrutiny for 16 years now. I'd be very suspicious of any major rewrite or modification. Moving to Segwit was quite a risk but appears to have not caused any direct issues.

I'd say there's some risk with the ECC but that appears to be fairly minimal.

ha! This circus there, despite being big, hires TV actors who are no longer successful
to work as clowns, there are many clowns on stage,
but the real artists, the jugglers and trapeze artists almost never appear,
but they work hard behind the scenes to keep the circus alive.....

Solution worse than problem? Adam Back opposes BIP-110 Ordinals fix

Blockstream’s Adam Back said BIP-110 could be used to freeze user funds, but the proposal’s creator argues that safeguards are in place to prevent that.

Before BTC Creation, They have already changed it to 'quantum-resistance, and why then my question that remains is, why didn't they already create BTC like this and only now are they worried about freezing the old addresses and maybe even stealing these?
These are things I can't understand.

Quote from: Wikipedia
At ...the RSA Conference 2005, the National Security Agency (NSA) announced Suite B, which used ECC for digital signature generation and key exchange. Suite B was later superseded by the Commercial National Security Algorithm Suite (CNSA), and NSA announced CNSA 2.0 as a quantum-resistant transition suite for national security systems.

Yes. Governance of BTC is quite a concern. I'll leave it at that.

Maybe you're right. I can't remember the exact details, but many years ago a friend of mine sent me a long exposure photo, where the stars had formed trails from their apparent movement in the night sky. I remember I did some calculations based on the size of the trails and then projecting the concentric circles the arcs belonged to, in order to locate Polaris (constellations pointed to the north hemisphere) and then using its position in the sky to compute an approximate latitude. But that's nowhere near an exact location... I had the impression I somehow had found the longitude too, but I can't recall the details. He gave me the exposure time (was in the order of minutes) and maybe also the date/time the photo was taken.

Interesting challenge!

Edit: updated text, as I remembered more details.
