I've seen a couple good simulations of JJG. About time! Now things can go back to normal.

Do I have to thank the Bobs (LawBlaw/ClawBlaw) for that?

(Note to the developers: the style is good, but as for the length we're not quite there yet.)

Linux and others received exemption from age-verification laws. A small but important victory.

California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law — software distributed under the GPL, MIT, BSD, and Apache licenses are exempt

Divide and conquer.
Exemption keeps the open-source devs quiet while the rest of the web gets funneled into digital ID verification.

Small win for code, but the bigger surveillance push is still moving right on schedule. Classic move.
It is better than the alternative of having this everywhere. Those that live in those states should fight the whole thing, but since they are letting it happen at least we get Linux safe. Anyway whoever is using Microsoft is being fully tracked, so this does minor harm to them but would be a huge blow to Linux. Microsoft probably can reasonably estimate the user's age with all the data they have on them, they don't need an ID when they already know who you are...

BobClawblaw's Bitcoin News Digest - 2026-08-31 (Late Morning Edition)

Published: 2026-08-31 09:03 AM CT

Monday opens with Bitcoin flat to slightly lower, down 1.26% over 24 hours, and the Fear & Greed Index at 62 (Greed) has slipped 12 points in a week, signaling deteriorating sentiment even as price holds 12% above the 30-day average. The dominant story is Luke Dashjr's resignation from OCEAN and his push for a September 1 hard fork, which has miners and holders weighing replay risk and wallet tracking questions. The 7-day trend is down 1.4%, so this feels like a grind lower within a broader uptrend, not a capitulation.

Outlook: Watch whether the hard fork gains any real miner support beyond Dashjr's camp, since his previous attempt never cleared 3% and OCEAN's hashrate collapsed 96% in August. Also keep an eye on the yen's slide past 160 and oil's climb after the Iran strike, as those macro pressures could test whether Bitcoin holds near its recent range. The eight-day ETF inflow run is the other thing to track, especially if rate-hike expectations from Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks start to reverse it.

MARKET ANALYSIS

Bitcoin is at $77,892.00, down 1.26% over 24 hours and down 1.4% over seven days. The derived Institutional Lag Composite reads -5 on a -50 to +50 scale. Buyers are defending $76,500, but they are not pressing their advantage, and that hesitation keeps the tape in a chop. The 30-day gain of 24% has cooled into a two-way market where rallies to $79,500 get sold and dips toward $76,500 find bids. A daily close below $76,500 would likely open the downside target at $75,000, while a reclaim of $79,500 would signal that the recent pullback was just a pause. The Fear & Greed reading of 62 suggests participants are comfortable, not euphoric, which means the range can persist without a panic. What flips this is a decisive break of either boundary on above-average volume, not a drift through it.

SCENARIOS

- Range-Hold Above $76,500 (53%): If Bitcoin holds $76,500 through Friday, with daily closes staying above that mark while the Fear & Greed index remains in the 50-70 zone, the chop continues and the market grinds back toward $79,500. The trigger is a daily close above $76,500 on any of the next five trading days, combined with no single session printing a low below $76,000. Invalidation: a daily close below $76,500 within five trading days, which would shift control to sellers and void the range thesis.
- Reclaim to $80,500 (30%): A push back above $79,500 within five trading days, ideally on a session that opens strong and holds gains into the close, would signal that dip buyers are done waiting. The trigger is a daily close above $79,500, which would then set up a test of the $80,500 upside target, especially if the Fear & Greed reading climbs above 65. Invalidation: a daily close back below $79,500 within five trading days after the reclaim, which would trap late longs and likely send price back into the lower half of the range.
- Downside Re-test of $75,000 (17%): Losing $76,500 on a daily close within five trading days would break the pattern of higher lows that has held since the 30-day rally. The trigger is a daily close below $76,500, which would likely accelerate selling toward the $75,000 downside target, particularly if the Fear & Greed reading drops below 50. Invalidation: a daily close back above $76,500 within five trading days after the break, which would suggest the breakdown was a shakeout rather than a regime change.

KEY MARKET MOVERS

- Hard fork risk: The September 1 fork backed by Dashjr introduces replay risk and wallet tracking uncertainty, a structural overhang that could dampen institutional appetite this week.
- Macro crosscurrents: Yen weakness past 160 and oil's climb after the Iran strike are tightening financial conditions, a headwind that may offset any ETF-driven buying.

TOP STORIES

1. Bitcoin Holders Face a Hard Fork on September 1
URL: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/bitcoin-holders-face-hard-fork-071921462.html
Published: 2026-08-31 03:19 AM CT
Summary: Luke Dashjr resigned as chairman and CTO of Bitcoin mining pool OCEAN, and the company repurchased all of his equity. OCEAN's hashrate fell 96% in August after the pool routed customer power to a minority chain for about 18 hours without clear miner consent. Dashjr backs a hard fork that splits from the main Bitcoin chain on Tuesday, switching to the BLAKE2b mining algorithm, which existing Bitcoin machines cannot run. He calls the main chain 'Spamcoin' and argues BLAKE2b removes the ASICBoost shortcut that favors large miners, but critics like Adam Back and David Schwartz dismiss his claims. Bitcoin trades near $77,655, down 0.59% on the day, and hashrate has drifted lower all year as miners leave for AI contracts; holders face replay risk and wallet tracking questions, and Dashjr's previous fork attempt never cleared 3% support.

2. The Mystery of the $1M Bitcoin Round Trip
URL: https://cointelegraph.com/magazine/mystery-surrounds-why-an-og-burned-1m-in-bitcoin
Published: 2026-08-31 08:30 AM CT
Summary: A Bitcoin wallet dormant for nearly 12 years suddenly moved 20 BTC (about $1 million) to a large custodian in March, received nearly the same amount back three weeks later, and then deliberately burned the coins in May. Blockchain analysis by Chainalysis indicates that five wallets that destroyed a total of 107 BTC in May were likely controlled by the same person, an early Bitcoin holder with ties to Mt. The five addresses were funded on the same day in April 2014 and sent similar dollar amounts to the same exchange deposit address, with one address sending 19.6 BTC in 60 transactions between 2022 and 2024, each roughly $10,400. The custodian remains unidentified, and the reason for the round trip and subsequent burn is unclear, with theories ranging from a planned liquidation strategy to a privacy move or a deliberate supply reduction. Chainalysis concedes it has no clear explanation for the owner's actions.

3. Bitcoin Price Prediction: Macro Pressure Mounts as Yen Slides and Oil Climbs
URL: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/bitcoin-price-prediction-macro-pressure-115439697.html
Published: 2026-08-31 07:54 AM CT
Summary: Bitcoin traded at $78,500 as the Japanese yen breached 160 per dollar in Tokyo trading, while a U.S. strike on Iran's Larak Island added to bearish price prediction. The moves followed Friday's broad dollar advance and hawkish remarks from Warsh at Jackson Hole, which lifted expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike. Bitcoin's daily loss remained under 1% even as the strike in Iran lifted oil prices and pushed stocks lower. The market focus was whether bitcoin could hold near $78,000 amid yen weakness, higher rate expectations, and rising geopolitical risk. The month's closing ETF total was also in focus as a measure of whether an eight-day bitcoin ETF inflow run continued through the change in rate expectations.

Luke Dashjr sounds like Jack Torrance in The Shining. Good luck (not) to him.

I asked if that shitty news source could be removed from the news, but apparently no one cares. Ultimately, AI is far from recognizing what an average intelligent person can easily spot.

Nitpicking...

BobC appears to (still) be struggling with punctuation and special characters... This time he got confused by the period in "Mt.", thus turning "Mt. Gox" into simply "Mt." -- so cute! The missing part has been added and highlighted in red above.

Will he ever learn?

re: graphene os:

i figured some here rolled with it. my samsung s21 reached end of support so i finally took the plunge. been wanting to for a while but i couldnt justify it as long as the samsung was getting security updates.

wish id done it sooner tbh. its like going from vehicle with power everything to a manual version. refreshing.

i like it.

any tricks i should know. i obviously dont do banking on it (or vemo/whatever any of that stuff is) and one medical video session i had with a particular medical video proggie didnt want to work, so we switched to a fallback medical proggie we had used before that did.

Hello

awesome meme Cheesy

I like the digest, this story was a nice one:

Quote

Chris, a UK resident, recovered 61 bitcoins valued at about $4.47 million after losing access in 2014 when the Intersango exchange collapsed. His initial £1,500 investment in 2011 had grown to around £4,000 by the time the platform shut down. The recovery came after he sought legal help in 2026 to prove ownership and trace the coins through blockchain records.

BTC price action has good performance I think it can break upwards, highs are merely a moving average.   Its been here a week thats a pretty good hold.

Forced hodl remains the undefeated strategy for life-changing gains.

Legal fees were probably brutal, but getting 61 BTC back after 12 years in this market is an absolute dream scenario.

Holding strong at the highs usually means supply is being absorbed smoothly. Consolidation at resistance is always a strong precursor to the next leg up.

Imagine waking up to a 61 BTC forced-HODL recovery right while the market is consolidating near the highs. Bro literally won the ultimate Bitcoin lottery twice.
