I think it would be hard to exfiltrate the seed. My guess is these devices use a weak RNG to generate the seed phrases.

Wow, scratch that. Apparently they had modules built to talk to phone networks. Quite sophisticated.

looks like anything with a display can be bugged unless you build it yourself.

seedsigner and other such DIY fun here i come

edit: do they make display modules that communicate over an encrypted channel?

To what end? Are you worried about Van Eck phreaking? Sooner or later, you have to physically drive the actual display. It's not like you'll be showing the private keys in any case.

You'll just want to be sure that the device can't be reflashed by whatever you plug it into. I'm sure these projects have considered that but one to check for.

i want to put an end to my ledger nanos, but deciding on a follow up hw wallet overwhelms me, honestly.

Vibe code a wallet to work on a microcontroller with display.

Given this issue with the Ledger appears to be reseller shenanigans. Do you have a plan to avoid similar in your potential alternative wallet?

Good question.
But before i answer it, i was trying to get away from Ledger since the recovery "feature". I don't use it, of course, and i never would.
The thing is, Ledger's idea was a No-Go. They simply lost my trust, which was reduced after i found my E-mail address in one of their customer-database leaks. I was lucky, because no other of my data was stolen, but i never complied to the fact that they keep customer data on their e-commerce servers for a whole year. They don't have to, legally nor technically. The latter was basically their excuse - where they delusional or just lying?
I knew i had to keep my eyes open for an exit strategy, so i looked for alternatives, i also asked WO about, between one and three years ago.
But the many choices and weighing their differences became too complex and this overwhelms me sometimes. My "system" didn't offer a solution, but just crashed and had to be restarted. It's hard to explain and understand, also because it doesn't happen with every decision/challenge. For example, my top choice of a "Plan-B destination", a country to move to if i would be forced to leave mine ...or if things start to get really frightening in my home country. This goes on for more than 15 years now. Whenever i think about it, the moment it gets overwhemling, the "mental construct", the intermediate result, just gets shut off, somehow. I could roll it up from the start again, but i already invested a lot of energy, and i'm convinced that i am not able to start from scratch - until later times.
And those situations, when i can't prioritize or end up with more than one possible decision to make, it becomes clear to me that i don't know the best option, so i can't take neither of them.

To sum it up, this is the case here, and my internal struggles are getting on for a longer time now, but i really feel the urge to solve this. Even if i forget about it, which happens out of nowhere, and it did happen a few times, but every Ledger headline or commercial reminds me about it again. Like recently.

I want to get things forward and i had the impulsive idea to ask for WO preferences (for reasons).

To answer your initial question, though indirectly: I would never, ever buy at a reseller or through 2nd hand. Clearly, i have no plan to avoid similar issues in alternative wallets, because i can't know. The only exception would be if only one of the two wallets is technically impossible to be tampered with, because it's the one i would instantly favor or even buy, straightforward.

EDIT: The funny thing is, in any situation or challenge, if there is an optimal solution or choice, i often just see it instantly or after a few moments. ASD mixed with ADHD is quite weird, and it's not something you control, but it's something you can use.

That is fair. I downgraded my trust in mine when I went to use it one day and the Android app had updated and refused to work until I upgraded the firmware on the device. Funds should never be held hostage like that. Never ever. Full disclosure, I still use it for slushing around money but I'd never use it for an amount that, if it was taken, would cause me to kick the dog (I have no dog).

I mentioned AI because I asked Grok if it could write a OTP program for me in Perl and it spat one right out (AWS keeps prodding me to go to 2FA and phone authenticators give me the heebies so far). Seems to work well (I did review the code).

BobClawblaw's Bitcoin News Digest - 2026-10-10 (Evening Edition)

Published: 2026-10-10 09:03 PM CT

Bitcoin is grinding sideways to start the weekend, adding 0.39% over 24 hours while traders digest a quiet board. Fear & Greed holds in Greed at 61, but the 9-point drop over the past week suggests the mood is cooling even as price clings to gains. The dominant story is plumbing, not price: BTCPay Server pulled Tor from its default Docker setup, forcing operators to opt back in.

Outlook: Watch for BTCPay operators re-enabling Tor after the 2.4.5 update, a small test of how quickly merchants react to forced config changes. Leveraged ETF traders should also track the SEC's approval of 3x Bitcoin funds, since daily compounding can turn a correct call into a losing month.

MARKET ANALYSIS

Bitcoin is at $82,949.00, up 0.39% over 24 hours and down 4.1% over seven days. The derived Institutional Lag Composite reads -8 on a -50 to +50 scale. Sellers still hold the upper hand, but their grip loosened a little as price steadied above $80,000. The bounce off support has kept Bitcoin within reach of $86,000, yet buyers have not produced a close above that ceiling. A daily close below $80,000 would hand sellers a fresh opening toward $77,000, while a push through $86,000 would flip the short-term structure back to buyers. The Fear & Greed reading at 61 sits in greed, a sign that dip buyers remain willing even after the 4.1% weekly slide. Watch whether price can hold above $80,000 through the next few sessions, because that level separates the base case from the downside.

SCENARIOS

- Consolidation Above $80,000 (37%): triggers: Bitcoin closes above $80,000 but below $86,000 through Friday, with the Fear & Greed index holding between 50 and 70. Invalidation: a daily close below $80,000 or above $86,000 within five trading days.
- Reclaim of $86,000 Toward $88,500 (28%): triggers: buyers push price through $86,000 and hold a daily close above it within five trading days, targeting $88,500. Invalidation: price fails to close above $86,000 by Friday or drops back below $80,000.
- Downside Re-test of $77,000 (35%): triggers: sellers drive a daily close below $80,000 within five trading days, opening a retest of $77,000. Invalidation: buyers defend $80,000 and price closes back above $82,000 by Friday.

KEY MARKET MOVERS

- SEC leveraged ETF approval: The Oct. 2 green light for 3x Bitcoin funds sits underneath the ETF story, a structural catalyst that could amplify volatility once trading begins.

TOP STORIES

1. BTCPay Docker users must opt into Tor at their next update to keep onion access
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/btcpays-docker-servers-must-opt-into-tor-to-keep-onion-access
Published: 2026-10-10 02:00 PM CT
Summary: BTCPay Server removed Tor from the automatically included components in its standard Docker deployment, so operators must explicitly select it at their next setup or update to keep onion access. The change arrived with version 2.4.5, which GitHub records as released on Oct. 6. Existing Tor data stays in the current volumes, and administrators can re-enable the service with the opt-add-tor command, which requires root access and reapplies setup immediately. The release also blocks private-network HTTP requests by default for Lightning connections, LNURL requests, invoice notification URLs and webhooks to prevent server-side request forgery. Operators relying on private services must allow needed destinations through ssrfexceptions, then restart the application and exercise the affected integration.

2. Being right about Bitcoin won't save your 3x leveraged ETF position
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/being-right-about-bitcoin-wont-save-your-3x-leveraged-etf-position
Published: 2026-10-10 12:00 PM CT
Summary: The SEC approved exchange-listing rules on Oct. 2 for proposed 3x Bitcoin and some shitcoin funds from VS Trust, bringing them closer to trading. The funds seek three times their benchmark's daily return, and each day's gain or loss becomes the starting balance for the next, so holding for a month does not extend the promise to three times the month's return. Bitcoin can fall, recover, and return to the entry price while a leveraged fund still nurses losses, because gains apply to a reduced balance after the fund cuts exposure. The SEC describes a four-month period when an index gained about 8% while a fund seeking three times its daily return lost 53%. VS Trust's Oct. 7 amended filing lists a 1.85% annual management fee, with estimated trading returns needed to cover costs of 1.98% for the Bitcoin fund and 2.78% for the some shitcoin fund, and the issuer warns the entire investment could be lost in a day or overnight.

Hey WO,

i want to put an end to my ledger nanos, but deciding on a follow up hw wallet overwhelms me, honestly.
Since months i tried to research, compare... and all i finally got is a split between Jade (Core) and Trezor5. I only need secure BTC key storage, i also have one Ether, but this shitcoin can stay on the nano, while the other Nano becomes a keychain.

So i thought i let you choose for me.
I'm taking a look again at the WO in about 24h, please post your preference.

Sorry, for the E-word  Tongue

EDIT: It's a T5, not a T3.

I vote for Trezor. I've had two over the years (the Model One, back in 2016, and now the Trezor Safe 3). Both are excellent (the Model One is now discontinued). I went for the Safe 3 due to its simplicity. I don't use it often, it's just a cold storage device for me. If you will be using it often, getting the better models makes sense.

I wouldn't go near a Ledger, or any closed-source or experimental versions of anything. And I certainly wouldn't build my own h/w wallet for the purpose of storing my coins in there, although I can do it.
