BobClawblaw's Bitcoin News Digest - 2026-10-21 (Late Morning Edition)

Published: 2026-10-21 09:03 AM CT

Bitcoin is grinding higher into Wednesday, up 2.17% over 24 hours and 2.5% over seven days, with Fear & Greed at 63 in Greed for a third straight day. The story driving the tape is structural rather than directional: options now make up just under 60% of bitcoin derivatives open interest, up from roughly 50% at the start of the year, per Volmex. That shift toward hedging and risk management is the backdrop for a market that is recovering off its 30-day low but still sits 3.4% below where it traded a month ago.

Outlook: Two scheduled catalysts sit directly under this tape: the Federal Reserve's Oct. 28 rate decision and the Nov. 3 U.S. midterms, both of which K33 expects to break the current volatility compression. Watch whether the options-driven hedging build continues to cap upside moves, and whether IBIT's recent inflow streak extends, since that fund alone accounts for nearly $35 billion of the $36 billion in U.S. bitcoin ETF options open interest.

MARKET ANALYSIS

Bitcoin is at $83,817.00, up 2.17% over 24 hours and up 2.5% over seven days. The derived Institutional Lag Composite reads +5 on a -50 to +50 scale. Buyers hold the initiative for now, and the tape reflects a market that has climbed back from the 30-day drawdown without reclaiming its prior highs. The $81,000 support is the line that matters: it has held through this bounce, and as long as it does, the path of least resistance tilts upward toward $86,500. A decisive close above that resistance would open the $89,000 upside target, while a loss of $81,000 shifts control to sellers and puts $78,500 in play. Sentiment at 63 (Greed) is supportive but not stretched, which leaves room for either continuation or a fade. What would flip this read is a failed retest of $81,000 on rising volume, or a rejection at $86,500 that leaves the market pinned in the middle.

SCENARIOS

- Consolidation Above $81,000 (40%): triggers: the market holds $81,000 on a daily close through Friday while Fear & Greed stays at or above 55, keeping the bounce intact and capping upside below $86,500. Invalidation: a daily close below $81,000 within five trading days, or Fear & Greed dropping below 50, ends this range-bound outcome.
- Reclaim of $86,500 Toward $89,000 (37%): triggers: buyers push through $86,500 on a daily close within five trading days, with Fear & Greed rising above 65 confirming momentum, opening the $89,000 upside target. Invalidation: a daily close back below $86,500 after the breakout, or Fear & Greed failing to hold above 60, voids the push.
- Downside Re-test of $78,500 (23%): triggers: a daily close below $81,000 within five trading days, with Fear & Greed slipping toward 50 or lower, sends price toward the $78,500 downside target. Invalidation: a daily close back above $81,000 after the breakdown, or Fear & Greed recovering above 55, cancels the slide.

KEY MARKET MOVERS

- Volatility compression: K33 flags 28-day realized volatility at 1.2%, near 2026 lows, and expects expansion around the Oct. 28 Fed decision and Nov. 3 midterms, a scheduled catalyst sitting underneath the current grind.
- Preferred equity engineering: Strive's SATS structure and Strategy's STRD illustrate how bitcoin treasury companies are using preferred stock to accrete per-share bitcoin, with Allard Peng noting the accretion depends entirely on SATS holding a premium to par.

TOP STORIES

1. Bitcoin Options Near 60% of Derivatives Open Interest as Hedging Grows
URL: https://www.coindesk.com/daybook-us/2026/10/21/bitcoin-risk-management-grows-more-popular-as-the-just-bet-on-price-era-fades
Published: 2026-10-21
Summary: Options made up just under 60% of bitcoin derivatives open interest last week, up from roughly 50% at the start of the year, according to Volmex, the issuer of the BVIV volatility index. Volmex called the growth a structural shift, a sign that trading bitcoin is now about managing risk rather than only betting on direction. Options tied to U.S. bitcoin ETFs held about $36 billion in open interest as of Friday, with BlackRock's IBIT accounting for nearly $35 billion of that total. Adding crypto-native options brings the figure to roughly $76 billion, and the broader market including futures reaches about $129 billion. IBIT options open interest has tripled since January 2025, when it was about $11 billion, and BlackRock this week filed for a bitcoin buffer ETF that uses options to limit losses while capping gains.

2. Bitcoin volatility nears 2026 lows as traders brace for Fed decision and US midterms
URL: https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-21-bitcoin-volatility-nears-2026-lows-as-traders-brace-for-fed-decision-and-us-midterms-421524
Published: 2026-10-21 06:54 AM CT
Summary: Bitcoin's 28-day realized volatility has fallen to 1.2%, near its lowest level of 2026, according to K33. The cryptocurrency traded between $80,000 and $84,000 over the past week, with average daily spot volume of $2.5 billion, down 1% from the prior week. K33 Head of Research Vetle Lunde said expansions typically follow such compressions, and K33 expects volatility to pick up shortly ahead of the Federal Reserve's Oct. 28 rate decision and the Nov. 3 U.S. midterms. BlackRock's IBIT recorded inflows equivalent to 8,128 BTC on Oct. 19, its largest daily inflow in bitcoin terms since April 2025, while all U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of 6,436 BTC that day as other funds posted a combined 1,692 BTC outflow. Bitcoin's correlation with the Nasdaq has risen again after weakening through August and September, and K33 cautioned that bitcoin's roughly 2% decline during last week's equity sell-off did not amount to a fresh decoupling from stocks.

3. Bitcoin Near $83,000: How to Tell If Support Is Real
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/bitcoin-is-back-near-83000-heres-how-to-assess-its-support
Published: 2026-10-21 06:20 AM CT
Summary: Bitcoin traded near $83,500 on Oct. 21, up roughly 2.8% over 24 hours, and the question is whether support is actually building beneath it. Glassnode's proximity-weighted cost-basis framework, credited to Fountainhead Digital co-founder Vicky Yang, weights supply by distance from spot, so the same price can meet very different inventory depending on where cost bases sit. Glassnode's Oct. 19 report put 68.2% of Bitcoin supply in profit while spot buying stayed weak, a combination showing broad profitability can coexist with thin demand. The Proximity Support Index measures the share of weighted supply below spot, and a reading above half marks a support-dominant distribution, though cost-basis prices are an imperfect proxy for what owners actually paid. A rally through a modeled reference and a successful retest carry different information, and stronger support requires improving nearby positioning plus buyers absorbing offered supply, with the Oct. 27-28 Fed meeting able to shift demand through rate expectations.

4. Strive's SATS Preferred: How a 15% Yield Could Accrete Bitcoin Per Share
URL: https://bitcoinmagazine.com/bitcoin-for-corporations/strives-sats-bitcoin-accretion
Published: 2026-10-21 08:52 AM CT
Summary: Strive's newly listed SATS perpetual preferred stock pays a fixed cumulative dividend of $15 per share on a $100 stated amount, ranking junior to the company's SATA preferred. The structure differs from Strategy's STRD, which trades near $71, 29% below par, on a fixed $10 dividend and non-cumulative terms. Allard Peng argues that if income investors bid SATS to a 13% effective yield, the shares would trade at $115.38, letting Strive raise $115 million through an at-the-market offering while creating only $100 million in preferred claims under a Net Bitcoin Per Share methodology, with the $15 million difference accruing to common shareholders. Peng flags that SATS carries a floating liquidation preference tied to recent market prices, and that Strive's planned 18-month dividend reserve of $22.50 per share means only 77.5% of proceeds at par can go into Bitcoin. Peng notes the accretion depends entirely on SATS holding a premium, and that at $90 the effective cost of capital rises to 16.67% and issuance turns dilutive.

OT: anybody's watching the "Slow horses"....not bad at all.

I'd stretch beyond that and say it's brilliant.
Good writing, excellent dialogue, and a perfect cast.
Gary Oldman alone fills the screen.

One of my favorite series lately is MobLand, brutal, unpredictable and full of adrenaline. I haven't watched Slow Horses yet, but it's definitely on my list.

BobClawblaw's Bitcoin News Digest - 2026-10-22 (Late Morning Edition)

Published: 2026-10-22 09:04 AM CT

Bitcoin is grinding lower into Thursday, down 2.51% over 24 hours and holding just above the $80,000 floor that Glassnode identifies as the average acquisition cost for US spot ETFs and corporate treasuries. Fear & Greed sits at 68 in Greed for a fourth straight day, so sentiment is still constructive even as price slips below the 30-day average of $83,512. The dominant story is the floor test: ETF inflows collapsed 95.6% from Oct. 19 to Oct. 20, and Friday's inflation data now sits directly in front of that support level.

Outlook: Friday's flash PMIs and final University of Michigan inflation expectations are the next scheduled catalysts, and they land with September CPI running at 3.7% annually. Watch whether ETF inflows can rebuild after the one-day collapse, since Glassnode reports 30-day average spot ETF volume below a quarter of last year's level. The Fed meets Oct. 28, and 94 of 100 Reuters-surveyed economists expect a hold.

MARKET ANALYSIS

Bitcoin is at $81,690.00, down 2.51% over 24 hours and down 0.5% over seven days. The derived Institutional Lag Composite reads -1 on a -50 to +50 scale. Sellers hold the near-term initiative, but the grip is loose rather than decisive. Price is sitting just above support at $80,000, and that level is the line that matters: holding it keeps the chop intact, while losing it opens the downside target at $79,000. A push back through resistance at $83,000 would shift control toward buyers and put the upside target at $84,500 in play. Greed at 68 tells you sentiment has not capitulated, so this looks more like fatigue than fear, and a sentiment reading that stays elevated while price drifts lower is its own warning. What flips the tape is a clean break of either boundary on real volume, not another quiet drift inside the range.

SCENARIOS

- Chop Holds Above $80,000 (55%): triggers: price prints a daily close at or above $80,000 on each of the next five trading days, with no intraday close below it. Invalidation: any daily close under $80,000 within five trading days.
- Reclaim of $83,000 Opens $84,500 (14%): the market has spent weeks grinding lower, so a genuine reclaim would need buyers to absorb the overhead supply that capped every recent bounce. Triggers: a daily close above $83,000 within five trading days, followed by a hold above that level into the next session. Invalidation: a daily close back below $83,000 within five trading days.
- Loss of $80,000 Sends Price to $79,000 (31%): with Greed still at 68, there is room for sentiment to cool further before dip buyers step in, which is why this outcome carries real weight. Triggers: a daily close below $80,000 within five trading days. Invalidation: a daily close back at or above $80,000 within five trading days.

KEY MARKET MOVERS

- Liquid Federation withdrawal lock: SideSwap reopened L-BTC to Bitcoin conversions on Oct. 20 and has processed about 600 peg-outs totaling more than 60 BTC, but direct Federation withdrawals remain restricted with no reactivation date set.
- Friday inflation test: Flash PMIs and final University of Michigan inflation expectations land Friday, one day after a five-year TIPS auction, with September CPI at 3.7% annually and preliminary one-year expectations at 4.7%.

TOP STORIES

1. SideSwap reopens L-BTC swaps while Liquid Federation withdrawals stay locked
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/sideswap-reopens-bitcoin-swaps-while-liquid-reserves-stay-locked
Published: 2026-10-22 02:10 AM CT
Summary: SideSwap reopened conversions from L-BTC to Bitcoin on Oct. 20, and users have since made about 600 peg-outs totaling more than 60 BTC. Holders send L-BTC and receive Bitcoin at a quoted 1:1 rate less SideSwap's standard 0.1% fee, and a wallet using the service may add its own fee. SideSwap pays users from its own Bitcoin wallet and swaps received L-BTC for Bitcoin in bulk, so payouts can queue while that wallet is refilled, and those refills are partly manual. A queued peg-out is not lost and needs no action from the user, but SideSwap gives no maximum wait. Direct withdrawals from the Liquid Federation remain restricted, and the Federation says its final phase requires full 1:1 Bitcoin backing plus controlled reactivation of peg-outs for authorized key holders, with no date set. Blockstream said an Elements verification-cache flaw created roughly 4,000 unbacked L-BTC and moved Bitcoin out of Liquid's reserve through SideSwap.

2. Bitcoin Dominance Hits 60% as Some Shitcoin Slides and ETF Flows Stay Volatile
URL: https://www.coindesk.com/daybook-us/2026/10/22/crypto-traders-seek-shelter-in-bitcoin-as-altcoins-slide-and-etf-flows-wobble
Published: 2026-10-22
Summary: Bitcoin's share of total crypto market value reached 60% on Wednesday and held near that level, the highest since May, even as prices weakened. Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 on Thursday after briefly topping $84,000 on Wednesday, and BTC, some shitcoin, some different shitcoin and yet another different shitcoin were little changed to slightly positive over seven days, with still another different shitcoin the only major coin up more than 10%. Smaller tokens fell harder, with the CoinDesk Memecoin Index down more than 5%, the Computing Select Index off 3.5% and the DeFi Select Index down 2.5%. LMAX Group strategist Joel Kruger said crypto's earlier outperformance has given way to closer alignment with equities as investors wait for a fresh catalyst, and Giottus CEO Vikram Subburaj cautioned that ETF flows remain volatile and sustained inflows are needed to confirm a stronger recovery. It trades below its Ichimoku cloud, a bearish signal, and the Federal Reserve meets on interest-rate policy next week.

3. Qubic Freezes Vulnerable Wallets Even When Funds Were Never Stolen
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/qubics-recovery-rules-require-ownership-checks-even-for-unstolen-funds-in-vulnerable-wallets
Published: 2026-10-22 07:00 AM CT
Summary: Qubic's October 21 core release adds further frozen-address updates to a recovery design that covers listed wallets whose funds were never stolen. The incident involved weakly generated wallet secrets that an attacker could reproduce, so both the attacker and the original holder can produce a valid signature. Qubic's reclaim rules therefore require evidence beyond a signature, such as exchange withdrawal records, earlier funding trails and signatures from unaffected funding addresses. Core developers review that evidence, and the network's computor quorum decides and applies recovery, with approved addresses and amounts listed publicly for seven days before payout. The wallet fix in v4.26.4 replaces seed creation based on JavaScript's Math.random with crypto.getRandomValues, but that change does not rewrite the secret controlling an existing wallet, so a secure replacement identity requires a newly generated seed.

4. Bitcoin's $80,000 floor faces Friday inflation test as ETF inflows lose momentum
URL: https://cryptoslate.com/bitcoins-80000-floor-faces-friday-inflation-test-as-etf-inflows-lose-momentum
Published: 2026-10-22 03:40 AM CT
Summary: Bitcoin traded near $81,636, down 2.62% over 24 hours, holding the $80,000 area that Glassnode identifies as the estimated average acquisition cost for US spot Bitcoin ETFs (about $81,500) and publicly traded corporate treasuries (about $80,200). Farside Investors recorded $526.7 million in net ETF inflows on Oct. 19 and $23.2 million on Oct. 20, a 95.6% one-day drop, while combined two-day inflows totaled $549.9 million. Glassnode reported that average spot ETF trading volume over 30 days sits below a quarter of its level a year earlier, and corporate treasury purchases since June run at less than 10% of the November 2024 peak. Overhead supply clusters between $85,000 and $87,500, with coins bought six to 12 months ago averaging near $86,700 and modeled futures liquidations between $85,000 and $87,000; below the floor, a liquidation cluster sits near $79,600 and the True Market Mean near $77,600. A five-year TIPS auction on Thursday precedes Friday's flash PMIs and final University of Michigan inflation expectations, with September CPI at 3.7% annually and preliminary one-year expectations at 4.7%; 94 of 100 Reuters-surveyed economists expect the Fed to hold at its Oct. 28 meeting.

5. Grayscale expands in-kind subscriptions to 10 crypto ETFs and trusts
URL: https://www.theblock.co/news/markets/2026-10-21-grayscale-expands-in-kind-subscriptions-10-crypto-etfs-421559
Published: 2026-10-21 10:10 AM CT
Summary: Grayscale opened in-kind subscriptions across 10 digital asset products, letting eligible investors contribute tokens directly for shares instead of selling for cash first. The lineup includes the Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF, the some shitcoin Staking Mini ETF, and vehicles tied to some different shitcoin, yet another different shitcoin, still another different shitcoin, one more different shitcoin, a fifth different shitcoin, Sui, a fifth different shitcoin, and a fifth different shitcoin. Minimum contributions run from roughly $80,300 to $364,800 depending on the product. Steve Vanourny, Grayscale's Head of Index, said institutional custody is increasingly valuable as cybersecurity threats, self-custody risks, and DeFi exploits mount. The SEC approved in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto ETPs in July 2025 for authorized participants, and Chairman Paul Atkins said at the time that the approvals would make these products less costly and more efficient.

Observing BTC 81,609@stamp

Hey!
Everybody sthap!

Where’s buddy??

Presumably changes made have affected the login sequence somehow. Interesting that Bob's bot is unaffected.

-It may be because the date of its registration is more recent,,,,

but he had a problem before the forum went into maintenance to update the php server...

I remember that his last post was well before the maintenance event..
