Don't need an optical drive or an SSD.  A 2GB USB flash drive is fine.

8GB of memory is overkill.  2GB is fine.

Be aware that this Sapphire rebate is limited to one unit per household, so don't count on being able to redeem all of them.  I found this out the hard way, myself.

Thanks for the info - I think having the SSD drive does make it easier to debug the unit though if something happens.
The USB drive can be finicky IMO.

I thought I've read many times that LTC rigs need the memory - I don't know why, but that seemed to be commonly recited.
If that's not correct, care to explain why? I'd love to learn (and save money in the process) ...

USB Flash has always worked well for me with no weirdness using 2GB Kingston DataTravelers.  I guess if you got bad flash drives you may have a problem.  A hard drive or PXE works too.

I've heard that too about RAM, but I can say that I have 3 rigs right now with 4 cards each that do Scrypt just fine with 2GB of RAM, and show plenty of memory free.  I run BAMT on mine, which uses a 32-bit non-PAE kernel, so they can't see more than about 3GB anyway.

The memory requirements are for when you run Reaper. If you are using cgminer or something else it is not an issue. Thanks for the offer - the build list is public in the previous posts. I'm also down to chat more about builds, but zif and I have worked out a solid deal moving forward and looking forward to it. As he mentioned, this build is unique because it's hosted and the power prices are "almost negligible".

The other great guy on here is delarock and MKEGuy - both doing some work and talking about future projects, etc.

Wow...busy week. I have a small update. I have completed most of the open air frame and am now working on wiring it up. Should have the rest ready tommorrow afternoon.

This is the 1st prototype. I have already found some better materials to make the uprights and the crossbars. This is pretty sturdy yet still light weight..I will improve upon it.

I'm one of Zif's customers and found his services through this thread, so I thought I should provide an update about this excellent service.

Zif was very helpful in preparing the parts list and answering questions.

Once the hardware was shipped to him, he assembled, installed, and configured the rig in a very short time.
He had the system pointed to the pool of my choice in less than a day after the shipment.

Even though the fourth GPU required the use of risers which were waiting on a separate order, he had three GPUs running for me during those days. Once the risers arrived, the hardware setup was rapidly upgraded for all 4 GPUs, and the mining configuration was updated.
 
The rig has been running for over a week now, and I'm very happy with the whole process from start to finish.
