The open source projects in the past decade have successfully migrated from Sourceforge to Google Code and most recently to Github. All of those earlier repos are still online. Now, the largest OSS outfits, like the Linux Foundation, Apache, Eclipse, GNU maintain their own depositories, with multiple mirrors.
For me personally, the MS news was initially upsetting, based on the decades of dislike of MS. However, in this case MS was moved by a desire to demonstrate their commitment to open source, reiterated by the recent Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella.
