A lot of people have advertisements in their signatures that can be annoying to look at. The forum has an option to "Don't show users' signatures." Do you have signatures enabled?
I think this is poll will have interesting results.  Smiley

You can disable signatures here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=theme  Cheesy

I have them enabled. I thought it helped with ad revenue for the forum. Isn't that what Theymos has written when you go to disable them? And I think you need to be a senior member to be able to turn them off no? Or is it full member?

You are not right. Signatures doesn't helps for the revenue of forum. Forum are getting revenue from ad slots, which is different thing:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo.
And you don't need to be full or senior member to disable signatures.

Yes, ads are different to signatures. Theymos auctions off ad space each week, and pays the moderator's wages with the auction revenue. Only Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators can disable ads. This is a quote from theymos's latest ad space auction.

Ad blocking

Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression stats for your ads.

This is the setting for disabling ads that Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have. I never disable ads because they don't bother me, and the forum needs the revenue from them.

This is the setting for disabling signatures, although I'm not sure what bitcointalk member ranks have it.

This is what I see with ads enabled. You can see the yobit ad below someone's signature.

This is what I see with ads disabled. You can't see the yobit ad anymore, but the signature's stil there.

How ? The signatures are actually good in a way to stay updated with the latest happenings in the bitcoin world.I tend to open signatures with catchy quotes.

Flashy signatures aren't a big deal for me as so far (aside from what's being advertised) I haven't seen anything really annoying. So yes, everything is enabled here. What I consider to be annoying is that people (mostly spammers) constantly keep over-quoting each other plenty of times. It clutters the thread unnecessarily and makes it difficult to have a proper read.

Signatures reward posters for activity. Increased activity helps the board revenues. I suspect this is what was meant in an earlier post. There is a counter argument that sig spamming reduces the quality of the board, and this means that ad impressions are less valuable.

I haven't disabled them.I believe signature is a good source of information also.I get to know about lots of good ICO and other bitcoin related services through signatures of other users.
Various users wear different signatures and they help spread information in most aesthetic way Smiley

No,signatures and forum advertisements are two completely different things.Users carrying signatures doesn't contribute to the forum financially while the paid adds on the forum, out side of your signature space does help pay for forum's services. But yeah if you look at it,
Signatures -> Gets more people on the forum ->Interests advertisers to market their products on the forum.

I have them turned off. Such a better browsing experience. Every once in a while I don't log in and end up seeing the signatures again. It's a good reminder that having them off is a huge improvement.

Look at it this way. People post hundreds and thousands of posts, but normally the signature is displayed every single time. No signature is so good that I want to read it a thousand times.

The number of users that have disabled ads can be found here https://bitcointalk.org/adstats.php [but it's not working now]

I have them enabled because I like sometimes to see what's going on, and what people put on signature, I may find something interesting sometimes.

If people hate them they can hide, you can hide the avatars too so it's everyone's preference.

I have that enabled since it doesnt really affect much on seeing things on the forum. Unlike normal advertisement that blocks the important stuffs. And somehow i find as decorations for the forum since most of them are very colorful.

I have them disabled.  Sick of looking at QTUM and all the other ones that attract shitposters like poop attracts flies.  That's probably a bit hypocritical, but I do my best to keep posts constructive.  When I see people getting paid for basically crapping all over this forum, it pisses me off.  And I don't intend to ever click on a signature, so there's no reason to see them.  Same thing with the avatar.  I don't care about either one.

Enabled. I don't mind the advertising. I particularly like browsing over the personalised signatures filled with peoples' own projects. There's some interesting stuff out there.

I voted yes, I wouldn't disable them even if I could, signatures are not annoying only spammers are, and I prefer to ignore them cause they are the real problem. At least they are not so many of them now compared to a few months ago.

I think you missed my point. Of course signature and board adverts are different things. I assume that part of the board revenue come from payments for views of the board adverts. The more posts and the higher the forum activity, then the more impressions there will be for board adverts. Rewarding posters with signatures increases the number of posts. This can lead to a degredation in quality, as some posters will be more interested in exposure for their signatures, than in preserving the integrity of the forum.

Now I know that signature can disable and enable in this forum. But for me it's okay even if it's enabled, so that you can see the new sites, new altcoin and new projects without opening one by one thread to just see this. And so that their effort in doing some signature codes will not waste. Lastly, it is like a design in this bitcoin forum.

I've just seen the OP's sig, and I don't that that Bitcoin talk, as a representative for the Bitcoin payment systen, should be promoting porn. I don't think it should be promoting gambling either. What's going to be next - recruiting for Soros's fake demonstrations army?

People are basically free to advertise what they want in their signature space as long as it doesn't collide with the forum rules.

Subjects you mentioned are peanuts compared to all the blatant ICO scam campaigns that are running (mostly) in the altcoin section.

There is nothing we can do about it since (if it doesn't collide with the forum rules) you are free to advertise whatever you want. It's up to the people to avoid falling for scams, not the forum. That's how it is here.

BSV is not the real Bcash. Bcash is the real Bcash.
