The UN-linked International Narcotics Control Board on Thursday condemned the use of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines, where President Rodrigo Duterte's much-criticized war on drugs has claimed more than 6,500 lives.

Duterte was elected in 2016 after promising to eradicate drugs in society. Since June, police have reported killing more than 2,550 people while more than 4,000 others have died in unexplained circumstances.

In a new annual report, the INCB said that "extrajudicial action, purportedly taken in pursuit of drug control objectives, is fundamentally contrary to the provisions and objectives" of international drug conventions.

The news is not new for me. United Nations has been a very vocal critic of President
Duterte especially the drug problems and extra-judicial killing in the Philippines.

And then what? We used to hear the concerns of such organizations and governments of different countries. Where is the action? While Duterte increased strength and have not updated the army to act. Then it will be too late. If not then why would the UN need?

I don't think that the UN can do anything to him so long as he stays in the Philippines. Once he travels to a country that is a UN member he could be arrested there.

Even though he has good intentions as to his motive in making Philippines a drug free state and deliver it from that plague that has ravaged the country the way he is going about it is what I won't subscribe to because even the law enforcement agencies might be corrupt and might use that to silence rival parties and just engage in extra judicial killings. I don't believe UN wants the worse situation to continue but in my own opinion let the President do it the right way arrest, prosecute if found guilty, sentence accordingly.

If not prove it? It is impossible to prosecute a drug Lord according to the law. He is not a drug dealer. All drugs go through the hands of middlemen. It turns out that they can only be tackled illegally.

No one will love killing, except people who are trigger happy.

That's normal, we should condemn extra judicial killings. People who are killed thru this is not right, imagine if your neighbor, brother, son or any relative died in front of you for no reason. It would be unfair.

We are concerned about killing and cruelty against animals, and yet we want to kill people.

This can't go on for a very long time. Till now, more than 6,000 people have been killed by the vigilante squads and the cops. And my guess is that at least 20% of the victims were innocent civilians, who didn't had anything to do with drugs.

-Even before during the previous reign of the previous presidents of the Philippines extra - judicial killing is rampant but the media is not highlighting it. But today they are very eager to really check every details and reviews police reports as to that matter. The reason is that there are many people who are involved in drugs who have money and power and has connection on the government, media and other organizations have joined forces to throw the President out so they can again earn billions of pesos in drug trade.

Are they really sure that those victims are victims of the president or victims of the drug lords and other syndicates themselves. The media is controlled by oligarchs who are the political enemies of the current president and thats the reason why the president is branded as a killer. It is the same situation with Donald Trump, the media is highlighting that he is an idiot and a useless president and guess who is the mastermind the political enemies of Trump.

Wherever you go as long as you go against the elites that controls the mass media and other sectors of the society you will be taken out since politics is business and the President is the cause of their big losses. Now you know the reason, dont believe in everything the media throws and widen your mind.

It seems to me that it's not a war on drugs. This is a real civil war. Just Duterte covers up its actions in the fight against drugs. Wonder why it still does not see the UN. Maybe it really is time to close down this organization?

its just the bias media who's making allegation and pointing this up to the President I think he's just serious with his action and those who have been affected especially those small time drug pusher's and addicts is just the real victim here those big people behind are the one's who's doing it to divert people attentions and media is also doing bias reports pointing the problem with the President.

It seems to me that in the Philippines drug killed fewer people than from the drug. Under the pretext of combating the drug Duterte establishes a dictatorship in the country.

The UN is the organization that can not do anything, but they don't want to lose the funding and are trying to do to show their importance. Unfortunately more than to demonstrate their concern, they can not. Why then do they need?

While I agree the UN has no "teeth", they serve an important function as they democratically form global opinions about the actions (usually bad) of state level actors. When we come to a consensus (as a group of Nations), we provide the rhetoric for other nations to shape their foreign policy (like how very few nations fuck with NK publically. They are quite unpopular, associating with them can lower your international standing with other states). So, as a " legislative" body, the opinions they form are useful. But they suck ass with no real army. All the rhetoric in the world doesn't mean too much without guns  Grin

Then suck all their arguments. If they only chooses the countries that they want to allegedly provide justice(not a fair one probably). F*ck their opinions as well if they cant provide fairness to all

A massacre of 6,000+ people obviously attracts international attention. If you remember, even Obama had came out strongly against Duterte last year, which provoked Duterte to call Obama the son of a prostitute.

Well i think this president's style of governing is way beyond the regular politician's norm. I agree that if whats happening with all the killings is state sanctioned, then its prone to abuse. With this many people dead, i doubt that all of then are guilty of being in connection with drugs. Though i think the un for the longest time is acting selectively. There are a lot of human rights violations as well all around the world that seems to be neglected by this international body

I don't think that the UN can do anything to him so long as he stays in the Philippines. Once he travels to a country that is a UN member he could be arrested there.

The UN is not some kind of international police, at best they can make recommendations and take diplomatic sanctions against the president or in the worst case against the whole country.

The media is over reacting the numbers of death and all blaming it to the president. Tho it might be true that his war on drugs killed tons of life, it isn't his order alone that lead to those people deaths. It may be the drug sindicate itself killing innocent people to make a bad image of the war on drug project in the media.

I can partially agree with you. Compare the war on drugs in Mexico, to that in the Philippines. As per the conservative estimates, the Mexican Drug War has caused around 100,000 deaths. The number of deaths from the drug war in Philippines is just a small fraction of that number.
