Is it recommended to mine on VPS?

NO. Most providers that offer cheap VPS, hate it when users attempt to mine on it and as result suspend those users account.

In other words, is it profitable to do so?

It has been unprofitable for years.

Why don't you do it at home? it taxes the hardware and burns power
so if you are making more than you are paying for your vps, it's likely costing them more than you are paying them...

Really if you want a hosted kind of mining you can rent out your own hardware from someone else and pay for electricity and all that stuff or find a datacenter and host your miners there. VPS' are unreliable and like everyone else above said, you'll get your account removed for mining most of the time.

VPS providers generally prohibits the use of VPS for mining. I think,  Renting cloud mining was nicer .

Almost all cloud mining services don't ROI at all. Google I think has already banned mining on their cloud services

I have seen most mining  operators does not allow you to mine on VPN. Better to use your very own hardware for mining
