A couple have been detained in the United Arab Emirates for having sex outside of marriage.

The South African man and his Ukranian fiancee were reportedly arrested after a doctor in Abu Dhabi who treated Ms Nohai for stomach cramps discovered she was pregnant.

Formal charges have not yet been brought because Ms Nohai is apparently undergoing "further tests" to determine how long she has been sexually active.

In the UAE, all sex outside marriage is illegal, although in Dubai, a blind eye is usually turned to unmarried western couples who co-habit.

When western people read such news, they are shocked usually.
There also ban alcohol, religious witnessing, insult prophet Muhammad etc.
We can think, from our viewpoint, that they are to strict or to radical but it's their country, their society and their life.
We should respect it and adopt to such rules, specially if we want to work in such strict Muslim countries.
They are trying to maintain strict order in society, keep strict moral values and rules and who are we to judge them?
I'm sure that their countries will negotiate with UAE and liberate them.
It's good warning for others.

I think if tourists would be warned about UAE Sharia laws, no one would travel there. Therefore UAE govt deceives tourists, then imprisons them for breaking some law which they have no way to know!

In these cases, a country from which a tourist come, can roughly demand to immediately release captured tourist. If UAE disagrees, threat them with a destiny of Saddam Hussein!
UAE will release this prisoner and likely ban entry for all citizens of prisoner's country and other tourists who planned to visit UAE will spent money in home country. Profit!

I have never heard of such actions by the authorities of the United Arab Emirates, in order to plant tourists. It would be an international scandal.

Well I'm not in the UAE! I probably would have not simply arrested and shot. Islam is a religion of the middle ages. For them there are no rules except their beliefs.

This is going to be following Sharia Law as I would suppose that the UAE actually supports and follows by law, this is going to be something that westerners (like myself) aren't going to be able to understand fully due to the way that we approach these things in our world. Some may think it isn't OK ethically, but I wouldn't impose any sort of jail time for it as it's usually just punished enough by public opinion.

Still, I think Islam is going to have to adapt as a Religion just like other religions are forced to in order to follow the standards of the times today. It's tough but it's going to have to happen.

It is illegal, but people get prosecuted for unmarital sex extremely rarely in the United Arab Emirates. What happened with this couple was that they were plain stupid and ignorant of the rules.

Most likely UAE authorities deceived these tourists on entry, not warning them about Sharia laws! So this couple is not stupid, but UAE govt is a criminal for false imprisonment!
