If people actually stopped using the same machine they have their wallet software on for their day to day tasks, it would help alleviate theft. I've seen a few people bring me their computer for service and right there on the desktop in between azerus and bit torrent in a nice bitcoin icon 

Not really an issue if you avoid dodgy sites, have decent antivirus (for Winbloze), encrypt wallet.dat and don't leave thousands of BTC sitting in a hot wallet all the time. Obviously, for saving/storing large quantities of BTC, a cold wallet is the only sane and effective solution.

I've encrypted my wallet.dat for sure but with the balance I have at present, I could happily do without it and avoid the small inconvenience of having to enter my passphrase to spend money, etc.

I feel like half the mining software in BTC mining uses libraries or code from trojan's in it.  Like umm Ufasoft's coinminer.exe for example.  Or, you know how other miners use libraries common to trojan's and viruses.  I understand you don't want to write your own library, dats cool, remove shit you don't need from the library you use and rename it.  I suppose the easy way is just compile your own code.

He is right, that there is Trojan software in a heap of bitcoin stuff,

but wrong in saying encrypting your wallet will stop it getting stolen.

The trojens are often keyloggers so they just record your passwords and send that back with the wallet.dat

Even without your encryption password I suspect someone with enough FPGA fire power could brute force your password anyway.

Your best bet is to have your bitcoin client on a linux boot from a USB stick and keep it in a sterile quaranteened OS.

That's true, but such a system would not be as usable, what i do is i keep most of my bitcoins in a wallet on a linux fully encrypted and very barely use it , whatever i mine i send to blockchain wallet which has a 2 layer authentication, one is the google authenticator that generates a key every 30 secs or so.  Whatever is extra i send it to my linux wallet and whatever i might use i keep there.

There have been several viruses, even some of them with source code released.

Many wallet-stealing trojans exist. These trojans are viruses that steal your BTC. If your BTC is stolen, there is effectively zero chance of getting it back.

Worse yet, there are plenty of script kiddies and scammers that are going to be trying to get you to download and install it.

Don't install anything linked to on this forum, unless it's been found to be legit by someone with a good reputation. Assume everything is an attempt to steal your wallet.

You should also encrypt your wallet when not in use. In Bitcoin-Qt, click Settings in the menu bar and then click "Encrypt Wallet". Make sure to use a strong passphrase, but don't forget it! If you forget the passphrase, you will lose all your BTC. Other encryption methods exist, but are more complicated.

I also backup my wallet in a TrueCrypt container on dropbox. Should my pc breakdown I still have the wallet in dropbox in a secure way. My passwords range from 23 to 50 characters so I know it's quite secure.
