This is a gorgeous natural octahedral spinel crystal from Sri Lanka.  Spinel is a close relative of ruby, and in fact the same marble host rock that creates ruby creates spinel- the only difference is the chemicals present when the gemstone forms.  This natural crystal weighs .38 carats.  Another interesting fact is that spinel has the same crystal "habit" as diamond.  If you google "diamond octahedron" you will see!
