sometimes I wonder why the cost of commemorative coins that were minted for the sole purpose to be a collectors item not appreciated much over time
Even I have invested a good amount of money in various commemorative Indian coins and the price appreciation has been weak
Well, it depends. Some commemorative coins have significantly increased in value. But in general, your observation is right. I think the reason is that creating something as a collector's item not necessarily leads to widespread demand.
I think it is important to distinguish between collecting and investing. A real collector does not collect coins because of their potential to increase in value but because of their aesthetic and historical appeal.
That said, it's important to note that the coin collectors market is in constant change. Sometimes, coins and entire collecting fields see huge value appreciation after being exposed to blatant disinterest for decades (as a result, few coins were conserved in good condition).
