Alts doesn't have chances of overcoming bitcoin. Bitcoin has got a standard place with its multiple usage. So if in one way people stop using it someone prefer it for some other needs. This helps with the continued circulation of bitcoin and makes it gain strength little by little. The same is not possible with altcoins as they are mostly preferred for trading purpose.

As of now, i agree with you because the altcoins now are being used because of the traders and if we look for long term then it is still not that bright as bitcoin in long term stability because their foundation is not that strong so it is hard for the altcoins to compete against bitcoin and i think they will just stay in the market because of the traders but if we will compare against bitcoin then there is nothing to worry about.

My opinion is that altcoins will replace bitcoin on the usage level. However I think they will never reach its value. Eventually, after may years bitcoin will end up being some sort of high value collectible.

When it comes to usage level I don't think that alt coin will replace bitcoin on it. This will remain always the top crypto currency.

And if you think that after many years bitcoin will be having a high value, then that will make it more crowd choice.

So it will not be an easy thing to replace bitcoin with alts.

I don't know. I see it like having 3~5 alts for our daily transactions and bitcoin as the ultimate holding. I think it will unfold like cash and gold. Everyone uses and has cash but noone has or uses gold. However everyone wishes he owned some in his bank locker.

There are a lot of popular alts and no doubt that many are being used for daily transactions.

But still that is not enough to make a speculation or outcome that bitcoin can be placed by some other alts.

Another way to look at it is that people are starting to become more and more open minded about other cryptocurrencies as well instead of just worshiping bitcoins alone. Eventually, a loyal bitcoin user would like to take a look at other coins as well and study why are other people into it. Altcoins are profitable. As a matter of fact, it's very profitable that's why we see ICOs here and there that are just copy+paste of an old ICO. They just changed the name.

People invest in altcoins to get more bitcoins. So ultimately, all these altcoins investments are investments for bitcoins.

i think possibilities are always there. despite the fact that bitcoin is still number one crypto currency, and hope that it will remain as number one in future also.  but i think it is depending on the interest of the people, as in current time most of the people are taking interest in bitcoin, they are investing their assets in bitcoin and that is the reason that bitcoin is still the number one currency of the world.

Altcoins should drive this way too, standing under the shadow by bitcoin. Some do well find their own place like ripple or ethereum. I do not think today, an altcoin can replace the bitcoin or replace it on the crypto head but some coins can get a nice spot by its side.

Some alts may compete with btc to some extent but they have to provide some better technology , since Bitcoin is already popular most of the people know only about Bitcoin and have no idea about other existing alts .

So it's somewhat difficult for alts to compete with Btc as of now .

i do not see any alt that there is possibility for it to take the place of bitcoin, many people are thinking about ETH that it is growing now a days but i think the bitcoin popularity is as much that no other alts have, bitcoin is the pioneer of all the other alts and the bitcoin price is much high that no one alts can compete bitcoin.

Hard to speculate about future. We all can see that bitcoin right now is not exactly the best payment option or a currency.
BTC is better suited to be an safe haven asset, capital investment and long term option for hoarders.
Bitcoin is not doomed yet (Japan adoption!), there is still time to fix scaling problem and reach total dominance over altcoins.
But if the scaling war will continue for extended period of time, it is possible that ETH, LTC or DASH will take over BTC dominance.

I agree with you, it is difficult to speculate about the future of bitcoin (and all altcoins in general), because despite the supposed strengths of the new coins, I am not seeing a massive adoption of any of them in the real life and the market continues to be distributed among few.

Ans speaking of speculation, we must leave room for the surprises that the future and technology will undoubtedly bring us in the medium and long term. How about come Aug 1? Bitcoin will likely to split causing the general public (investors) going to alt coin like ETH? As you can see now, ETH market cap has been increasing and maybe can overtook bitcoin. ICO's are also offering ETH now as alternative to bitcoin. So it looks like to me that ETH may have a chance against bitcoin in the long run. Another parameter to consider is the quick transaction time and lower fees as compare to bitcoin ever increasing tx fee.

I just beleive once eth could get over 0.5 bitcoin per 1 eth , that time eth ready to compete with bitcoin.
It is has been an old conversation about how eth could be a surprising altcoin more than ltc, dash or dogecoin.
And today we have seen the all time high eth price over 100mbtc / 1eth , the end is near really!
