I don't know which planet you're from but on planet earth it only has been less than 24 hours and even in the last week there has been some nation wide DOS in my country, those idiots instead of wasting money on attacks could help to make the world a better place but I think I'm just dreaming.
I only blame Trump.

In the past few days though only some users were affected. Apparently, it's something more special rather than just bombing the servers with traffic. It wasn't offline it was just having connection problems and it was on and off not for 3 days straight.
I logged in yesterday and today it is fine now.

I don't know how long it took but I kept accessing the forum daily though. The only time I had a hard time accessing it was yesterday which after few hours I was able to login again. I saw a thread about DDoS attack to the forum yesterday too.

Yeah , When I seen this thread at once then I got shocked that where o was during the period of three days .
Actually I remain online about 4-5 hours daily in this forum but never face any problem like stop of the forum , but my few of the friends were facing to not to access the bitcointalk.org but when they opened in the chrome then they get easily succeed , so I think this problem was for the particular browser user ( to technical problem ) , and I don't think there was happend ddos like thing , Because this forum is fully safe and Trusted and more sucuire , so no chance of any  attack .

I have been having problems and struggling to get on, but it was intermittent.

Has the reason for this been announced? Often when it is taken down there is a dump

While the reason is still a bit unclear, it is suspected that it was a DDOS-attack, which lead to some users being unable to access the forums / weren't able to browse the forum smoothly, but with huge laggs, delays, and timeouts, (me).

Theymos has announced a temporary fix for people still experiencing this issue, and it resolved my problems, see this pastebin,
