BTC mining with (5) 7970's and they range from 65C - 70C all day/night.
No special cooling equip.. Just the stock fans on the cards? The setups that I have are both open air with one Lasko fan that I bought at Lowe's blowing across them.

Pfff, I only mine LTC and Im happy if my cards are under 100c. But they are kind of cramped up and OC'd to bejeezus.
My understanding of GPU tech is that the chips can run MUCH hotter than a CPU for long periods.
For a CPU, 90c would be too hot but for a GPU 90c is totally fine, but I have to set fans to 85%+ to get this, so fan life is reduced.
Mine run at 100-101C. Been stable for 3 weeks. It was a crappy designed 7950, where the fan spin at 100%, and still temp at 100C. Open air, no case. Used riser cable, space between cards.

Sheesh you guys, let those GPUs breathe!
Might be a good idea to reseat the heatsinks with good thermal compound like Noctua or Arctic Silver. I've seen 4-5 degree differences in reviews which actually could make a difference when we're pushing them to the edge like this.
Clean the surfaces well with iso alcohol and use a 5mm dab on the center of the GPU.

80C but prefer the fans to be less than 65%
BTW I just tried 2x7950 in a system and the top card hit 98C and dropped MH by half! Cards seem to work fine in separate machines.

2x7950 running at 925 core, 1250 memory, and undervolted to 1000, 555kH+ each Bottom card running at 69c, top at 75c, both on autofans, ambient around 30c.
Open case. At stock voltage with a closed case the top card was running 100c+ and running into thermal shutdowns.

haha, because it was throttling itself until the last month or two, i rarely had cards go over 80oC. now one or two do on hot days (maybe when it's 29oC or above outside) and I always have fans at 100% though at this moment out of my 18 cards, 6 of them have 120mm fans ziptied on. im not sure if i should fix that before ebaying or not. the reference fans used to cost like $10, now they seem to be around $15 as for those 5870 gigabyte dual fans and what not, forget it

May or may not build a 3x7950 system but I'm going to do a custom case with risers.

Back when I was in my own flat (before having to move back) I aimed to run my GPU at around 80C as the fans were just ineffective at their job (the whole flat was boiling from all that heat so there was no fresh air coming in to cool that PC).This ran 24/7 for several months like this as well.
HD6950 would crash at 85C due to unlocked shaders being unstable whereas running with stock shaders with same overclock settings at same temperature, kept running.
