I'm only guessing you're working your way through a lot of too low bids. But probably with good reason

If everyone bids 'honestly' or there are no bidding below the minimum, this would work.  Otherwise, John still have to parse through the whole thing.

I just use http://blockchain.info/stats to get the current rate, its on that page in the middle area (it says 82,000 GH/s)

Or you can read this page to work it out without any third party websites https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty
