So a couple of days ago, in a bloggers group on facebook; a guy asked what is bitcoin? And I was quite amazed to see that many people start commenting and saying stay away for bitcoin, its black currency, under world currency, or dark web currency and stuff like that.
Obviously the people who were saying this didn't know about bitcoin and have probably heard the same from someone else, but this is the perception of many around us.
What can be done to change this? Make BTC more user friendly? More appealing to general public?

Yes, there remains to be a great number of people even online who look at Bitcoin that way because that is what they have heard also from other people. Well, this is quite understandable as Bitcoin is very revolutionary something still new to many. Now...what should we do? I think I will just continue on holding to my Bitcoin and maybe do some trading with altcoins and soon Bitcoin can be really mainstream and we don't have to explain it to anyone. Now, I don't basically care what those others can be saying for or against Bitcoin because certainly those people are not affecting the rising value of Bitcoin.

very interesting! i thought this way of thinking died back in the early years like back in 2009-2010! and from what i hear from other people around me, none of them think this way.
they may not understand what bitcoin is or why it is rising but they surely don't think it is "black money!"

specially these days, i can say it is idiotic to think that when you hear a couple of governments in different parts of the world are calling bitcoin a legal method of payment!

p.s. what i mostly mean by "people around me" is people in real world. not online. online people say all kinds of crap, without thinking, mostly for trolling. the anonymity of internet helps them feel powerful enough to say anything!

Don't waste your time trying to convince people to join the bitcoin revolution, take it as a sign that you are a pioneer and take advantage of you being ahead of the pack to amass as much BTC as possible instead of trying to waste energy to convince people.

They will keep being on the denial phase until they are forced to understand the importance of bitcoin. Back then you couldn't convince people in 1990 about the internet, this is the same.

I have talked about bitcoin to my friends for years. Now that the price has continually been up they are interested. The only thing that changed their percerption really was the price. I did try to explain these things to them about how secure it is and how it will be the future of transactions and store of value.

Currently i got 2 really good friends into it and a relative. Last month none of them had any kind of coins. I pointed them to this forum to come read details.

The best thing I send people is videos on YT with Andreas explaining bitcoin. He does a good job.

The way we change perception is to keep pointing people to the videos and explaining the benefits. If the USA  only used btc they would have less desire to wage war for example. War is finances by taking out war debts and loans. When banks fund these loans they give the capacity for countries to wage endless wars because they keep getting financed. Through btc you could not have unlimited war loans because the btc runs out at a certain point and needs repaid.

The only thing that would grab their attention would be for successful legitimate businesses to share their stories. People like Patrick Byrne the

American entrepreneur and CEO of Overstock.com should write more about their successes with Bitcoin. People look up to successful people and

this is why successes should be shared. If your neighbour saw on television that some famous guy doubled or tripled their profit in Bitcoin, they

will take it seriously... but the media like to run with bad news and this is why people have perceptions like that... they only hear the bad news.

I think there is nothing to be done about bitcoin but bitcoin use cases. First of all Bitcoin should be projected and marketise well. Second if some more big companies start accepting bitcoin, people will start understanding it more and we who already into bitcoin should do our best to make people understand bitcoin and expand the community.

Globally bitcoin enlightenment is very slow I talked to people about bitcoin as a virtual currency but the general perception is that bitcoin is a scam. But I am trying to convinced them the more based on the bitcoin I earned through signature campaign.
I also convinced them that bitcoin earned can be used to offset some bills.

Whatever is not clear to anyone may not be well defined.
And those that defined bitcoin that way may be permitted since they have not drawn nearer to it. it their perspective as you have rightly said. you don't need to stress yourself about trying to convince them.

I remember people talking crap about bitcoin back in 2012 when I first got into it.  I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

At some point in the future, many of these people talking crap now will probably starting buying bitcoin, too.  Except they'll be buying small fractions of one, since they won't be able to afford a whole bitcoin.  And they'll be happy they did.

What can be done to change this? Make BTC more user friendly? More appealing to general public?

We have to do nothing, it´s just a matter of time. What is happening in Japan will happen in every country and every place in the world. There are more and more merchants, stores and companies accepting bitcoin everyday, you can even buy a plane ticket or book a hotel with bitcoin, soon people will be able to pay with bitcoin at the supermarket and they will see bitcoin is not a black currency or anything like that.

People are dumb enough said, if they don't do any research into the technology and just live in a world where they think its another Penny stock that's fine it just means that they will continue working and living on as plebeians in the cognizant wheels of societies lower rungs of labor.

There are many reasons why you have witnessed seemingly overwhelming negative comments about Bitcoin - it can be explained by the population of users who visit that groups, some groups of people are more likely to hate Bitcoin while others (like anarcho-capitalists, for example) may almost universally love it. Also, people might be just reacting to the recent wave of ransomware attacks. Views are generally formed by media, and all the positive news about BTC are posted in economic sections, while bad news (ransomware, drugs, other crimes) are posted in general sections, so it's broadcasted to more people.

I am not surprised. There are some categories of people who are very quick to make assumptions without even the slightest idea what they are saying. It is a part of psychology that can't be ruled out. Human mind has the capability of perceiving all possibilities of an event and then narrowing it down to very few outcomes of which depending on our past experiences with somethings we conclude to one event.

BTC is already accepted by some countries. Soon enough these wrong perceptions about bitcoin will change on their own. We do not have to do anything special, just continue using bitcoin.

Someone who said that are only casual observer, he/she probably know bitcoin only from mainstream media when bitcoin appears in context of being used by ransomware cyber criminals and drug traffickers.
Newbies like that have no deep idea about what bitcoin really is, they can only repeat idiotic claims leaned from TV.

I remember that in mid 90. the internet was viewed as useless invention, used by nerds and geeks, now everyone is using it...

Even my father used to call bitcoin, just another ponzi few years ago but now he is one of the happy investor of bitcoin.  Grin

Some people may have misinformation while some like to be oversmart and are known for looking at just negative sides of everything. Those peoples may also change their mind when bitcoin will get more acceptance in multiple merchants all around the world. When they will see a local shop near by started to accept bitcoin payments than they may also see positive sides of bitcoin.

There is nothing better than a Bitcoin awareness drive.  Obviously people who are commenting about bitcoin in negative way does not really know what bitcoin is.  By creating an awareness campaign about bitcoin will tackle most misconception about this currency and correct them.

more exposure and more positive advertisement will let those people who still in denial to invest and join this venture, bitcoin really gather much attention with investors and trades as soon s many newcomers to come forward a lots of new good things will happen to this system.

I don't care and I don't want or need to convince anyone, hell with them, I can see and understand how valuable Bitcoin is and why would

I want to share this small cake with others?

Think about it, only 2 countries announced officially about Bitcoin and we're up %100 isn't it a reasonable thought not telling anyone about Bitcoin?

As more people will start using internet and will completely depend on it in the near future, I believe the masses will notice Bitcoin in their own time.

We should use these dark times to own more coins to become what early adopters are to us in the eyes of the future generations.
