If bitcoin goes the way of yahoo, I suspect it'll be something way better that replaces it--not some shitcoin already in existence.   Bitcoin can do everything that any coin already on the market can do and in most cases better.  So yeah, it could definitely happen, but as to what would do it.  I don't think any of us know that.
Another possibility is that we kill the goose that laid the golden eggs, this is a possibility that is very real with the current debate about how to scale bitcoin, it seems the miners are bent to keep their hegemony even to the point of destroying bitcoin in the process.

I have been thinking a lot about this. What is the likelihood there WON'T come a coin with better technology, a cooler name (although I must admit, Bitcoin is pretty cool... so is Yahoo...), easier to get started with... I don't know. At the same time, We are still at the beginning of the crypto bubble, so to speak. Most of the world has never heard of cryptocurrencies, whereas in the late 90's almost everyone had at least used the internet. Therefore, I think it will be a long while (at least a few years) before something like this could happen.

Then again we are already seeing it in some ways with coins like Ethereum, so really you just never know.

Yahoo was the first (?) search engine at the time when Internet started.  It was the pioneer in its field.  In the late 90's its market cap reached to a high closed to $120B.   Three and a half years after Yahoo started, Google came out and gradually took away market share from Yahoo.

After 22 years, Verizon bought it for $4.8B.  Would Bitcoin ending up like Yahoo in the future and got beat up by new competitions?

What do you think?  Please provide your reason(s) to support your view.

There are possibilities that as you said that it will happen, there are no impossible in this world we live in but in my opinion bitcoin is different many people depend on bitcoin and bitcoin was the very first that cryptocurrency that came out. It is hard to predict if that will happen but there is a possibility on it but the chances are low because as we can see in market cap other coins are increasing but not as like as bitcoin, ETH is incredibly increasing but so as bitcoin so its hard to know if it will happen or not and when it will happen. For yahoo, yes it was at highest point when google was still not discovered but yahoo and google are search engines they are not cryptocurrency that many people can invest on them. Unlike bitcoin many people can invest even if your not rich and high but we don't know the future and who knows what will happen we just gotta wait see.  Wink

No. The main thing i think is that there are essentially nothing common in between bitcoin and yahoo. Yahoo is a search engine and every business decision is made by the CEO of the company, or other executives. But bitcoin has no "central authority". If one person decided to produce a hard fork of bitcoin, they are free to do so. however, the community can choose not to use it and let it die out.

I think you're suggesting here that Ethereum will overtake bitcoin. In this case, no. Google was successful because it solved problems that yahoo had, like a cluttered interface. But EThereum is just as divided as bitcoin, if not more divided with an active hard fork of ETC. Plus, network congestion right now is worse than btc as well.

Yahoo overtakes by google same with friendster to facebook, those were web pages in different purposes that can easily change too since there are more sites that can be a substitute to them, same with Bitcoin as a cryptocurrency and with ETH or any other alts, this cryptocurrency have lots of benefit financially in diff. value which is hard to replace easily since theres something to risk not only our accounts but we have investments or savings on it. But still we can't tell what may happen.

Op compares bitcoin with yahoo in terms of system innovation and technological developments, whether bitcoin innovation is moving slowly or not because many altcoins like ltc and so continue to spin very quickly. The global industry will really compete in this, and will only produce 1 winner in the crypto world. If bitcoin is only satisfied with the current system, then bitcoin will not be anything in the future.

Yup! I agree he just use yahoo for reference that yahoo was overtake by google now and I think google had made a real job in making innovative step, but I think that bitcoin can not be overtake by some mere Altcoins though even if Ethereum right now was going for the $500 dollar mark it is still way below bitcoin's movement you can really see the fact that no doubt bitcoin will not go the same fate as yahoo.

Maybe bitcoin will not going to end up like Yahoo because for me Bitcoin is really helping a lot of people nowadays and we are earning with this because of the value of the bitcoin is really good. So for me, I don't think bitcoin will end up like that.

Yes thats true bitcoin will not end up like yahoo, because it's always gaining it's demand from people who wanted bitcoin investments. We could not compare btc to yahoo website lossing their grip and their user decreases due to demand of website access. With bitcoin nowadays the users were increasing eventually and that's been affecting the good price value as well as to be more profitable.

I don't think we should compare the two. Like you said, Yahoo was bought for $4.8B, but who and for how much can buy Bitcoin? If anyone attempts to do it the price will sky rocket and they will run out of money long before they can acquire even 50%.

I think Bitcoin is more like Facebook: there are a lot of social networks around, but Facebook is still number one.

It is a mistake to think that you can say in the future, but there is a thing we must admit that btc will not be able to disappear like yahoo or whatever did , why do I say that? It's easy to recognize ... because nowadays, countries and companies are getting used to btc, so btc will grow and not gradually disappear.

I think no, yahoo and bitcoin is differ, because bitcoin is were people earn and bitcoin is a currency. Bitcoin is will not end therefore its better and become familiar. I think its much stronger because many people wants to invest in bitcoin and investors. No one predict the future but its impossible to happen in bitcoin that just like happened in yahoo. Because bitcoin has a potential and to become famous. Bitcoin is become a currency because on its familiar. We all see the future of bitcoin. And bitcoin is become familiar because many people will go bitcoin and interested especially investing and earn money.

Thats a very sad story i remember when i was in elementary i used to search at yahoo, but now yahoo is just a use for e-mail Sad as per the question that is possible in the future because no one knows what will happen maybe there will be a coin that would replace the bitcoin.

Your point of view is correct. Nowadays, bitcoin is one of most successful things in the whole world. Lot of people use it every days.

So the chance of the ending up like yahoo is impossible. This is the era of cryptocurrencies.

And there we have it  another logic failure.
You say bitcoin is not like Yahoo but you give another example of a same type of company.
You think people can buy Yahoo but not Facebook?  why?

And the second part is even funnier.
What if everyone would want to buy a share of yahoo? What do you think it will happen to the price?
Let me tell you a secret , it will act juts like the bitcoin price because those are the laws of offer and demand.

Comparing bitcoin with either facebook or yahoo or youtube or bing is plain stupid.

Comparing Yahoo and Bitcoin is comparing Afghanistan and USA.It is seems funny why?Because Yahoo was a network in which people chating with each other creating email , and it was a search engine; where Bitcoin is a crypto currency in which people are investing money to get bitcoins and high profit so bitcoin will never ending in a future.

I guess it will not be like that easily unless some sort of high technology came off and a new form of currency was made and more advance than bitcoin i guess it can be a reason of the bitcoin to go down but at this rate i guess bitcon progress will continue.
